Never played the game, but if this follows JRPG rules, he could try getting into the Bag of Infinite Holding. That's where I assume all your battling/traveling companions go between cutscenes.

I solely signed up just to prove what a huge nerd I am:
You can only fill foot soldiers into battering rams and they can only only hold up to 4 units. Plus it's more beneficial to fill in melee ones, because they actually increase the battering rams' movement speed. :eng101:

Well actually my first thought is a cheatcode that summons cars with shotguns but I don't remember the code.
