It actually doesn't mean anything. Even if you leave the kiln and walk away, the First Flame is still burning, if only a little. All you've done is made sure it will burn out eventually.
And the curse of the undead is not something that has been stated can be cured by linking the fire. In fact, it's rather unlikely, as Gwyn was still burning even when the darksign first appeared and the undead came to be. If you do link the fire, all you're doing is prolonging it, but the conditions are exactly the same as when Gwyn linked it. Which means the darksign has little reason to vanish.
That's pretty much exactly what I said.
The Darksign will only go away when the Age of Darkness comes. The world of Dark Souls is cyclical, and goes from Light to Dark. Because Gwyn perverted the natural cycle by artificially extending the Age of Fire, time itself is going bonkers and creating multiple instances of the timeline like Solaire said when you first meet him. The Darksign is a manifestation of the Age of Darkness and empowers the Chosen Undead in the prophesy to be immortal so he can end Gwyn and the Age of Fire so things go back to normal. There does seem to be a good chance that Dark Souls II is a prequel though. Maybe it's when the curse of undead first appeared, before they were all gathered and locked in the Asylum.
