If they're good they won't let you back stab them.

the same can't be said for parrying

backstabs can be unavoidable

parries are very easily avoidable

Unless you enjoy using a weapon that doesn't take four and a half years to attack.
Or magic.

if you're fighting a high-dex character you don't necessarily want the backstab or riposte anyways because if their attacks are too quick to put them in a situation for a backstab, they'll be too quick to consistently parry unless you have the reflexes of god and the person isn't already trying to backstab you

but if you have the reflexes of a god then it's still easier to just backstab them and you're still putting yourself in danger trying to parry


and magic is broken to all shit in dark souls

And even if they have quick attacks if you're poise is high enough you can try and riposte them so they know better than to rush you. They're too fast for you to hit if you're trying to tank their attacks and counter.

Except if they're too fast for you they're not attacking your front, they're attacking behind you.

It's a part of the PvP that riposte is worthless unless your opponent is super heavy and super stupid, and even then the backstab is a much better choice.

And if you have a lot of poise you're running high strength, and you shouldn't really be trying to riposte

I do 1500 damage with a parry from my ricard's rapier with Darkmoon blade
I do like 960 with a backstab

unless you're not talking PvP, in which case it doesn't matter, do either, enemies are stupid

but in PvP people tend to be sure to avoid giving someone the chance BECAUSE of the parry

I'm talking about PvP. Backstabs are harder to get because of lag, parries are easier to get because of lag. The window for parries is longer, and if they don't attack as often and play it safe it's much easier to predict when they'll go for the attack. If they spam wildy you can tank one hit and parry the other (assuming you have some poise, if you don't what the hell are you trying to tank hits for)
Backstabs CAN be good, but ripostes are much better for a reason.

see parries are for npc's, backstabs are for players.

backstabbing is good for when you first start out but if you can nail a parry it does alot more damage than a backstab and that can seal a deal on a close fight. but some enemies cant be parried (and some cant be backstabbed) so it all depends on your situation

both are good in equal ways
