Also Thief is a horrible class to start your first run with because you get the worst kind of shield. Ditch it once you get get something with 100% physical protection. Parrying and Riposte are not at all even slightly worth the lack of protection at any point.

edit: wait hold on what dark magic

where are you

I already ditched it for the Heater Shield, I'm not that dumb.
Grinding isn't fun in any game.
Also, PvP in the whatever the place near the first blacksmith is. Had to kindle some fires and well...
And no I did not go to the graveyard. Again, I'm not that dumb.

I'm intensely curious as to how you encountered dark magic. Or rather, how the invader was able to have it. That's... significantly above the level you should be at.

and grinding in dark souls is worse because of how it works

grinding anything that would level you quickly will also more than likely kill you quickly
grinding below yourself just takes forever
don't grind, bad idea

Use the White Sign Soapstone to do Co-op, which nets you souls and humanity for beating bosses. Just put a sign down by a boss. Until later on you won't really have the resources to do proper invading.

It's known as the Clyve effect, except in this case it's likely caused by Ame's deleted posts. Great Handsome Oppressor probably hasn't applied his magic cure to this thread yet.
I've noticed that it happens when someone makes a post while you're still writing yours.

when you have a good dex character you don't parry, you just backstab, and for a reason

parries require you to be still for a moment, find an opening, and hit at just the right time

backstabs just require you to be fast and find an opening

parries are worthless when you can backstab

Did Ame ever come back, anyway?

I haven't been backstabbing since those first lizard guys at Sen's. Do you have to strike right after you're behind the enemy?

No, he likely considered the incident a blessing and a way to be free of the cursed trap known as AZ.

You usually want to aim for the kidneys. Just being behind them may or may not work.

Backstabs are weird, especially if you sneak up on someone. I'm not sure why SOMETIMES it's a backstab and sometimes not.

You can't backstab an enemy if your shield is up when you attack, fyi.
Also backstabs are worthless when you can parry.

Can you riposte with any weapon? I've been playing it safe most of the time rather than trying tricks that could cost me half of my health.

Parying puts you at major risk.

If you're putting that skill above the one that actually usually puts you out of attack range

you have learned nothing

But parrying is also very very good and you should learn how to actually do it.
Saying one skill/technique is worhtless just because it takes more skill than something else is pretty dumb.
Riposting is so much more useful than backstabbing because I don't have to do the salsa with some jerkoff just so I can slip him a fat one in the back door.
