So I've been watching or re-watching grim, psychological type anime for a few weeks like Black Lagoon and Ergo Proxy and started looking around for shows that are just brutal and depressing. A series called Now and Then, Here and There came up as a strong suggestion for something you can only watch once because it's unrelentingly dark. It's short and I finished it quickly. The ending completely ruins the rest of the series for me. This show appears as a typical "lost in a fantasy realm" scenario at the beginning, but begins to take cues from the child army situations going on in parts of the world and shows every terrible facet of those situations in detail. However, it takes a hard left at the end and offers up some weird almost-pop flyin' ending? Sure, a lot of people are dead, but the protagonist whose blind optimism has never once helped himself or anyone is still as hopeful and pop flyin' as when we started. The show had a chance to buck every applicable trope and shoot for true tragedy at one point in particular but instead offers a bland march to a finale that offers no closure and no catharsis. It's just over.
