ROADSIDE PICNIC

IS A BRUTAL SHIV TO THE KIDNEYS IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS

I recently borrowed it off a friend without knowing it inspired a movie which in turn led to the Stalker games, but it is the perfect kind of short form science fiction. There are comparisons to draw with Do Androids Dream in some ways, in that it creates an incredibly bleak world of desperation, coupled with a protagonist who isn't necessarily a good man depending on your viewpoint.

Most importantly, it's a beautiful book, in the truest sense of the word. It shows people at their worst, and it shows people at their best. It isn't particularly hard sci-fi, which works in its favour really; it's too short to get bogged down in unnecessary details. The protagonist is sympathetic in the same way Deckard is - you feel a camaraderie precisely because he isn't perfect, because he does fuck up, because he does make poor choices.

Really, it's an excellent read, with an absolutely perfect ending. It's not long, it's fine Russian literature, it isn't difficult to read, and it will cost you as much to buy as a large big mac meal would. That is a small price for a book that could change your life.

I'm thinking of getting John Dies at The End and the sequel: This Book is full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch it.
Is it worth it?

I wouldn't get the second one, I hear it's full of spiders.

Bridge to Terabithia gave me STRONG EMOTIONS and solidified the book as great in my opinion.

The trailers for that movie were terrible so I never watched it. The book is great though, one of my favorite children's book.

A few days ago I checked out The Book Thief because I haven't read any novels in a long while.
It's pretty good. I'm about a third of the way through. The whole "Nazi Holocaust" genre seems a little overdone though, at least from all the books I've read.

Reading Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Absolutely brilliant, though sometimes my poor brain struggles to keep up.

I'm finally reading Coraline. It's nowhere as cute and double as scary.
