I've been on a serious Black Jack kick lately. I bought the first two volumes and have been watching the OVAs. I think this is my favorite of Tezuka's creations.

Whoa, aside from being a bit too-conveniently matched up (bad guys just HAPPEN to go against people with the perfect composition/ability to counter theirs), the last few chapters of Bleach have actually been pretty good. Very little art shortcutting, good action, and characters aren't falling prey to previous trends of "secondary=huge buildup and then worthless". The designs have been good in my opinion, even if the explanation of those designs is tragically shonen, in that I'm left saying "no, you idiot. Don't fucking explain the strengths and weaknesses to him, just freaking kill him. Cheez nips." And naturally, the chapters are a bit too short for my liking, but it's a weekly installment, so it's somewhat forgivable.

It's a nice return to what made so many people like the first two arcs.

This week's was especially nice. Good to see some development of Yachiru, and her Zanpakuto is pretty neat too. Here's hoping Isane manages to get a bit of development too, though I fear she'll just be around as the healing replacement for Unohana. Also, fuck yeah for Rukia finally winning a fight and NOT getting her booty kicked immediately after/needing bailing out.

I'm going to guess right now that the fluffy guy is going to get much more terrifying as the fight progresses. I'm also interested in why part of Yachiru's shikai (she never said bankai, after all) so closely resembles a hollow.

Also, anyone else find it interesting that for a group that claims such priority on purity, light, and exaltation, half the Quincies seem to end up looking awfully hollow-esque the more they power up?

I think it's more that Yachiru's shikai represents like a band of wild spirits coming together to fight, kindqa like ganging up on someone. The Zanpakuto spirits aren't "really" there and visible (I think) but they're shown to illustrate the invisible nature of her 3 blade system. It'd be kinda strange if it summoned them and they could become visible at will, though I guess it could be like Komamura's shikai. In any case, I don't necessarily think they're supposed to necessarily invoke hollows, more that they're more monstrous spirits than the ones we've seen before (Like Zabimaru).

Quincies kinda bug me a bit. The one in Hueco Mundo at least seemed like the typical "destroy the impure hollows and use pure reishi" paladin like organization you'd expect, but a lot of them have kinda grown grotesque and not really like that. It may come from the specialization of their powers through Bach since they all seem to be survivors of him reabsorbing the other lesser quincies, but they don't really even seem like super-powered humans. I mean, regular humans wouldn't regenerate like Mask de Masculine's partner James, or at least not in such an inhuman way (though he could have been some weird reishi creature I guess). I am enjoying the powers in general though and the solutions to fighting them, but I wish they put a bit more focus on the reishi manipulation and kinda mechanics of everything. It still feels like we're missing so much information on them.

Also, where the hell is Uryu's dad and where does he fit into all of this? He's a quincy that gave it all up, but how would Bach allow that? For that matter, what about Uryu's grandfather? Was he trying to reach peace with the soul reapers to quell Bach, was he still subordinate to Bach? Is it even possible to defy Bach since his blood is in everyone and he can technically kill any quincy off? I'm not really sure about this stuff, especially since Uryu's dad has a similar relationship with Isshin as Uryu has with Ichigo.

And goddamnit, when are we going to find out more about the Soul King. We finally got a view of him last year and then nothing has come of it.
