Knight joins party in the final dungeon. Final Boss is actually the embodiment of Cabbage's Jerkface-itude, like the guy at the end of FF4.

Nightmare Knight is actually incredibly genre savvy and aware of the world he is in. He knows he's been assigned the role of the Big Bad and he can't refuse to do it. He knows a hero will come along and defeat him, time and time and time again, and he knows it has to happen. That's why he sends minions out to defeat the hero instead of showing up and crushing him instantly. He knows the hero has to beat each of his lieutenants, thereby gaining strength, until he's able to defeat the Nightmare Knight and begin the cycle again.

He's probably not an evil guy considering what the comic's world is like. I think my theory may actually turn out to be correct.

Nightmare Knight is actually just a guy who spends a lot of time reading TVTropes.

If the princesses are powerful warriors/magicians it wouldn't hurt having them around.

I don't think the kingdoms are going to be similar to one another. Different princesses could bring different abilities/skills acquired in their unique kingdoms to fight the Nightmare Knight. Also Nautilus isn't an adventurer but, she can grow her skills and become more useful (hopefully).
