Lance's Pokemon are so well trained, their Hyper Beams can change direction in mid air using wave currents or some kind of bullshit. So far, he's the only one capable of doing it. And it's pretty awesome. This is actually a skill he has.

And they're able to surf on lava because of the Substitute surfboard, which as long as it remains, they're protected from the effects of lava. Or something.

Honestly, I'd thought you'd have more issue with Red, Green, and Blue sending elemental power through a string shot to Yellow and Pika without hurting them or doing jack squat.

Also, Gold, Silver, and Crystal is a pretty good arc. You might hit a bit of a frustrating point though when the artist changes over, mainly because the the storyline splits off.

The climax goes crazy awesome though.

You would get cooked alive from 100 feet away without protective suits. Substitute surf boards are not the problem here.

Substitute is still a protective move that prevents damage to the user, and since Pika is right next to Yellow, it's reasonable to assume Substitute would protect Yellow as well.

The bigger concern should probably be why the surfboard is able to withstand lava when it's made of HP and would surely be taking damage from touching fucking lava.

Have you watched anything in the idolm@ster franchise? It's made for everyone but a majority of the fans are otaku, also Puchi isn't a good place to start because you need to know all the characters to properly enjoy it. If you actually want to get into the series, watch the 2011 anime series and listen to a bunch of the music.
