TL;DR: I didn't like it.

Spoiler for negative opinion.

For me, it wasn't just the ending. Pretty much everything from the moment she shows interest in Mako onwards sucked. There were a lot of things I liked too... but they are completely outweighed by what, I felt, was shitty story telling.

There were a lot of poor story choices that were made, a lot of unexplained plot threads, and a lot of late additions to the plot.

Animation and music was pretty awesome, though later on the music didn't stand out as much. The swing music early on was a sweet addition.

I think they might have also been missing a voice director. The voice actors themselves weren't that bad, some didn't fit the character and some just needed a bit of coaching to be a bit less flat.

Characterisation was hit and miss. Some characters were just swept under the rug entirely.

Too much new information was revealed in the second last episode due to the climax being pulled out of their asses.
Too little plot development leading up to the climax.

They missed out on dealing with a lot of complex themes and concepts and instead devoted way too much screen time to teen romance.

The ending for Amon and Tarlok was pretty good, though that plot device only turned up in episode 11. So it missed out on having the impact it could have had if it had been a simmering story thread.

We could go into so much detail as to what is wrong but we'd probably piss people off.

Just finished the series. Gah, pretty much this. All the hang-ups I had with the show were listed here. That and I didn't feel that the romance added much of anything to the story because it was as pointless and predictable as fuck.

Oh also the fight choreography was lacking as the series went on.

I seriously agree with this. The fights were nowhere near as interesting as in the original. I will not argue that this did not disappoint me.

I guess, in terms of romance, you can always justify it with how unpredictable, spontaneous, and clusterfucktaceous teenage romance is in general. Although, debating anything over how stupid it can be in real life is a pretty flimsy argument.

You can't exactly get the same fight choreography as two benders when most fights were benders versus non-benders.

I found the fight between Korra and Tarrlok pretty good.

The fights when the Equalists stormed the Pro-Bending Arena were also pretty cool.

I think the problem with Korra is that it was TOO condensed. They had a lot to say and they wanted to trim out the fat, but by doing this, everything was compressed to the point where things like fight scenes had to be shortened.

I think they might've had things go a bit better had they stuck with the standard 20 episode season, maybe extended the Pro-bending/Airbending training section, and then adding some meat to the fights.

So I finally got around to the finale, now I can stop avoiding this thread like the plague.

It was good, but I was disappointed in that I expected it to be a bit more... emotional. I honestly don't see how Korra managed to unlock her spiritual side, she seems exactly the same as she always was. Yeah, she cried a bit, I understand that she lost something important to her, but we never really got to see inside her mind to see how she dealt with that loss before "oh hey guess what you got it back hooray!". It made it seem like losing her bending was never really a big deal in the first place.

I guess it's because its a shorter series, but I feel like most things in the plot were a bit rushed through. I prefer having more time to soak things in, to get a feel for what everything means in the long-term.

Overall, though, it is really well done as a series. I guess AtLA gave me higher expectations for portraying the deeper emotional/spiritual side of things.

Korra really didn't have much of a past to flesh her out though. She didn't have a traumatic past like Aang did because she was coddled by the Order of the White Lotus. Maybe the worst thing she's encountered was being attacked by an animal when she snuck out of where they were training her.

Also, her entire life has been focused on being the Avatar, she was proud of it and the white lotus trained her in solitude to ensure that she would reach her full potential as early as possible (though, I wonder why Aang could learn all of the elements in less than a year, and while she started with 3 elements she could already use as a young kid, it took her years upon years to learn them, and her bending isn't massive and overpowering like you would expect with better mastery than Aang would have). When that was taken away, what else did she have? She would no longer be a probender, and her entire life's work, the thing that she was proud of and that she gave up so many other things to do is gone.

Plus, that's not even considering the angst you would have of being a disappointment of an Avatar compared to others, especially when you're constantly compared to Aang.

I realize all that when I read into it, I'm more concerned with the way it was presented on the surface. It felt rushed, was all. It made it seem like it was a sad event, not a life-crushingly terrible event.

Maybe I'm too into darker stuff, but I expected more, you know, wallowing and angst and pain and suffering, with a darker ambiance and swelling music, I dunno, instead of running off to cry for 30 seconds. Perhaps that's just Korra's way of dealing with things, but it still doesn't strike me as a decent "spiritual" awakening.
After reading back a few pages in this thread, the potential to jump off the cliff theory is interesting, but I don't think there was enough in that scene to properly suggest that.

This is all fairly subjective though. I would've preferred the darker, more emotional stuff over closing up EVERY plotline (see also: Mako, seriously? I'm sure its been discussed to death already) but overall, still enjoyed it, it just didn't leave as huge a mark as I thought it would.

That last scene with Tarrlok, though, hooooooly cow.

When I was talking about fight choreography, I wasn't just talking about how the fights happened.

It didn't feel like there were multiple forms of martial arts. Everyone just punched and kicked in the air, and then elements happen.

While this is kinda explained early by Bolin showing Korra that the nature of bending had changed for Pro-bending, the thing with pro-bending is they have measured amount of ammo they are meant to use.

After Korra used the air bending footwork at the end of that one match, you never see her work through any other forms of air bending. We just have to assume that this is happening between the scenes. Then when she finally does air bend, all she is doing is throwing air punches. All that supposed training for her to air bend like a fire bender.

You might ask 'why is this important?' Well, generally speaking, in a good story the protagonist tries to better themselves to become strong enough to defeat the badie. Not just physically strong, but strong on the inside too. The journey towards that strength should make up a great deal of the story. But Korra didn't seem to really get any better than she was at the start. Then suddenly- Air punch.
