I KNOW I WANTED HIM TO LIVE TOO! D': They needed to take bigger steps with making him less cliche-Disney-villian as they had with other elements of the story (giving the prince a bigger role, making him flawed, making the princess work towards her dreams instead of sitting around waiting for them, etc.). They took one step forward and two back with him. They originally gave him a pretty cool sidekick in the form of his shadow(s), but then they introduced Lawrence. And then his scheme and death were both very traditionally Disney. I guess for all the steps they took making the story less stereotypical, they couldn't take as many with the villian. He was still FRIGGEN AWESOME though and, just like everyone else, I wish he had more scenes in the movie. Although the ones he did have were epic.
