Yeah I'm sorry Runes but Great Gatsby is a fantastic book that you really should read if you haven't yet.

I prefer the writing styles of "classic" novels to contemporary stuff. I dunno, I like teasing apart the wording to find the hidden stuff in there. Even if there's no way to tell what the hidden stuff actually means. I feel like deeper, darker emotions and motivations come out more in classic styles. I can't really explain it.

Maybe that's the point, that authors can't really explain those darker themes with more obvious terms and so they have to use things that don't make as much sense. But I'm probably just making stuff up now. :psyduck:

I've just been forced to read stuff that was the equivalent of the writer waving his dick around going, "Look at me defy conventional storytelling while getting praised for it. You'll have no clue what I'm saying so you'll invent some shit that makes my tale of masturbation seem deep."

Also known as James Joyce's "Ulysses."

Finally got around to picking up Hitchhiker's Guide. Pretty disappointed really. Guy had a lot of good ideas, but it reads like he's got the attention span of a moth, he introduces all this stuff then forgets it a page later. I mean, it was decent and all, but the amount of hype people talk about the thing, goddamn. None of the characters ever developed at all, Trillian never had any reason to be in the book to begin with, he just up and dropped the whole thing with Zaphod's brain surgery, the mice never really went anywhere, man. It all just came off as a really flat, pointless romp around space.

That's all it is. I don't know if someone told you it was a really deep thing or something but it's just supposed to be silly.

Well sure, I was ready for silly, but it just came off as poorly done. I mean, Wodehouse is fairly silly, and fairly pointless too, but things happen to the characters, problems are introduced and then solved, conclusions to events occur; I never really felt like anything mattered in Hitchhiker's, even to the characters. Nobody had any motivation, all of them were just going along for the ride.

Pretty much. The idea, I think, is that the characters are an audience for some ridiculous story the universe is telling, so they don't have any more say about what happens than you do.

That is sort of the point. Everyone is going along for the ride.

Also, did you read all the books, or just the first? They do clear up some things in the later books, along with getting some extra plot (sort of). Zaphod's brain surgery is like a pretty developed thing in like, the second book I think?

Only read the first one so far. I think the second one is lying around here somewhere - how many are there, anyway?

Four and a half. He died before the fifth one was finished, and someone else wrote it. I haven't read it so I can't vouch for it.

No, Artmeis Fowl was written by Eoin Colfer, Hitchhiker's Guide by Douglas Adams.

And I was mistaken about the book count. There were five completed books, and a sixth one that he didn't finish.

I remember really enjoying Starship Titanic, I think he had some role on the development team for that?

From what I've heard, she actually stays pretty true to Douglas' writing style and makes the book work pretty well, along with a more satisfying end to the series.
