I've got a few things lined up for summer reading, but I'm going painfully slow with them.
The thing I'm making the most progress with right now is Carl Jung's autobiography, Memories, Dreams, and Reflections. It's not exactly a page-turner, but it is full of wisdom and insight into a very enlightened man. I am learning a lot about myself just by reading it. And, it sounds pretentious, but I feel smarter just by reading it.
I'm learning as much as I can about Jung in order to prepare myself for the day I can afford
this. Basically, The Red Book is the very thoroughly thought out and brilliantly illustrated story of a mid-life crisis which snowballs into a psychotic breakdown. As Jung felt his psyche beginning to tear, he decided to "never to let a figure or figures that he encountered leave until they had told him why they had appeared to him." The result is a dive head first into the madness of the unconscious, flashlight in hand. The story told within is that of a hero's journey (fitting, considering that Carl Jung came up with the concept of the archetype) that leads to what can only be described as "enlightenment." I really want to own this book someday. I will read it and re-read it, learn from it, and reflect on and express what I have learned through my own art, in the only way that seems fitting:
A rock opera.
