I have two possible theories after looking up a LOT of what other people think:

[spoiler]1. Bern and Rika are two separate people. The only reason Rika and Bern look alike is because Rika is Bern's piece for Higurashi.

2. Bern and Rika are the same person till the end of Higurashi. Bern is the result of Rika's years of lives all together, and her boredom from the torture made her insane and ruthless which is why they tend to consider each other different. Rika is the same in every world, yet Bern is the part that traveled and witnessed every world.[/spoiler]

I tend to lead towards my second theory more.

Here's my opinion on the matter:

[spoiler]For one, Rika isn't the same every time- they explained that in the second season. Up until Bern/Rika replaces the Rika of that world to try to change what's going to happen, the personalities could be completely different.

At the end of Higurashi, Takano and Lambdadelta, and Rika and Bernkastel, became seperate entities; at least, I think so. They used to be the same person, but now that the game is over, there's no need for Rika or Takano to know magic or things like Lambda and Bern do; I think that it works on the same principle of what happened when Rika/Bern replaces the Rika of that world. Bern and Lambda are the "true" forms of Rika and Takano, and when the game was over Rika and Takano reverted back to their old personalities, with Bern and Takano gone.

I would agree, however there are two things that MAY disprove at least a portion of it.

[spoiler]When they are changing worlds (Rika/Bern and Hanyuu) Rika/Bern seems completely aware of all the worlds. She always refers back to old worlds she's been too.

And in Lambda's Diary it SEEMED to point that she found Takano as a child and helped her, impressed by her willpower. But it never said it was Takano by name. But if it wasn't, that would mean there is a while 3rd story that we never heard, or more.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]1. You misunderstood me. I meant that in each world, it's a different Rika until BernRika comes. Take this episode as an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRm6RWVWoGU&feature=related. Before BernRika replaced her, the Rika of this world acted like a princess. Completely different from how the regular Rika(Bern) acts. And also in this clip, take note of how the Bernkastel side of Rika (what she says after Satoko is beaten) seems to shine through. That's why I think they're the same person, at least until toward the end of the series.

2. To support my theory, I'm just gonna go out on a limb and agree that it's some third story we haven't seen yet. But that would mean that Lambda did the same thing to this new person as Bern did to Angie.

If it is a hint at a third story, it won't end well for whomever Lambda 'helped'. But if it WAS Takano, an I'm wrong, then I'm going to have to come up with something different to explain why they look alike.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]The VN's are amazing. I read the Umineko VN first and hated the anime because of it. Although I only read the Question Arcs of Higurashi and recently. It was pretty good and I could see why people who read it first disliked the anime (I liked it however).

Also the TIPS I'm talking about aren't in the games. They are bonus stories that Ryukishi himself wrote and released online. Some serrious some VERY funny.[/spoiler]

I would definitely recommend the VNs as well, they're really wordy, but there's a lot of emotion in them.

[spoiler]The first girl sounds so much like Takano, it's eerie. But, I'm going to hold onto my doubts though and say it's not. However, in case I'm wrong, I have an alternate theory regarding the Takano/Lambadelta relationship.

As a witch, Lambda and Bern can look like whomever they want. So, theoretically, they can look like Rika and Takano. I don't know why they'd do so, but it makes sense at least.

And about the second girl. I'm 90% sure it's young Beatrice. It's exactly the kind of thing she wants from Battler in the series, and it'd make sense for someone like Lamda to take an interest with someone with such potential, especially one who was already practicing and learning magic.[spoiler][/spoiler]
