I already did. It will actually be my first time seeing the series, and I can't wait.

Also I heard that the show was retroscripted meaning that they get a basic frame for the story but most of the dialog is improv to make it feel more "real"

which is even cooler than it sounds since both Morty and Rick are voiced by the same guy, so a lot of the show is the same dude arguing with himself.

Welp

Time to just stop watching cartoons altogether if even these shows are being pushed off to a place where cartoons go to die.

Because the younger demographic that the network is trying to aim them at isn't giving them enough profit (no toys/albums, blah blah blah). The main Disney television stations are aimed a 7-14 year olds. Because those are the people who buy related merchandise. When their primary audience ends up being the 17-30 range, who will enjoy the show, and talk about it, and lead to more viewers, They typically don't buy the merchandise aimed at children.
So Disney decides that it needs to make room on the main stations for something that they can successfully attach merchandise to. If I recall correctly, Disney XD (and whatever the preschool station is called now) is licensed to the cable companies separately from the main Disney station. That means that Disney is getting paid extra by the companies/viewers that want to have that channel, because it has the still-airable, but less profitable programs.

The thing is that I don't think Wander Over Yonder has any merch and Gravity Falls only has things available on WeLoveFine, which isn't a site that their target demographic would necessarily know about.

And their Star Wars cartoon, which should have merch everywhere, is going to be on Disney XD, a paid cable channel that basically ensures that the fewest possible people see it and can be enticed to buy toys of it. It's like... everyone knows they own Star Wars, and they honestly don't feel like showing off their hot new property, one of the most popular and lucrative franchises in entertainment history, on their main channel? This is a brand new level of insanity on the part of network executives.

I'm wondering if the Internet can try to breathe life back into non-film western animation and try to break out of this cycle. I mean, there are good cartoons being made right now, but at the same time the whole mechandise-driven market makes it so that there are cartoons with a lot of promise being cancelled because they either can't sell enough toys or because their toys sucked booty.

Regarding the Internet, crowdsourcing through things like Kickstarter and Indiegogo may not work because animation is expensive. You can make a short film, yeah, but an entire season of something takes a large amount of capital. The best bet would be for animators to look towards online entertainment studios like Maker or Frederator and pitch their series to them. Hell, Amazon is dabbling in everything these days, even cartoons, so that could work.

You don't often see characters at that point of desperation in children's television cartoons

I wonder if Steven can actually die from old age though.

I appreciate that Garnet, when under stress, will resort to violence.

What network is it going to be on? I'm willing to hold out hope that that youtube video I posted a while back just referred to old episodes.

Same here, although I think the likely option is that the gem side of his heritage allows him to modify his age freely, seeing as he could reverse his aging instead of only accelerating it. So he could theoretically stay young as long as he'd want to. It also places additional importance on him being able to mature.

Snyder the Sky Dragon is no longer in charge of Cartoon Network

We have already begun to recover our cartoon heritage recently, perhaps this will accelerate the process. Then again we could always get a worse CN exec.
