So I have neglected this for a while in favour of things that aren't this
so rejoice children for I have returned
the new anime season is not new anymore and kinda sorta over so I'm not going to bother doing new shows until the next one, I might do a post full of short summaries of what was good
but in this post I'm just gonna gush about Horizon and how great it is
ON THIS EPISODE
KYOUKAI SENJOU NO HORIZON
"Horizon In The Middle of Nowhere"
Aight before I get to the plot and shit let me talk about the production of Horizon.
The anime is based on a series of light novels, if you don't know "light novel" refers to a kind of novel that is basically easy going to read, they don't contain many kanji and so are pretty simple. Horizon books are no way "light", they are massive tomes full of so much made up science and fantasy jiggawatts that you need a degree in fictional bullshit to comprehend what is happening.
Now when a show is adapted from a book normally the publishing company is like "Okay this is popular let's animate it and make some cheddar" so they commission some anime studio to make it and that's it.
But in Horizon's case, Sunrise (One of the biggest animation studios) had some spare time or something so they went straight to the author Kawakami and said "We want to animate your books"
Animating something like Horizon is insane, it's just way too difficult, which is why Sunrise wanted to do it. They picked Horizon to prove that it was actually possible and to prove to everyone that they are the shit and can pull it off.
The author Kawakami is also rad as fuck, the guy is 40 or so and came up with the setting of the series 25 years ago and didn't start actually writing about it until a few years ago. He has 3D models of the major locations that he made himself, folders and folders of information on the setting and characters and Horizon isn't even the start of it, it's something like phase four of his grand six phase story that follows humanity over thousands of years. He was heavily involved in the production of the anime too, giving all the recourses that he made to Sunrise and making sure that they get every detail right. (He holds livestreams after every episode has aired where he points out all the shit that people wouldn't even think to notice)
also he buys hugging pillows of his characters
THE ACTUAL SHOW
So the basic gist is that when they were kids the main character Toori Aoi's waifu Horizon Ariadust got killed in an accident. Back to present time and Toori finds an android working in a cafe that looks exactly like Horizon and decides to confess his feelings to it.
Some stuff happens and it turns out the android has a part of Horizon's soul in it. Hooray she's not totally dead! The bad news is that the rest of her soul was used to make some WMDs called the "Deadly Sins Armaments" which are distributed to various countries.
Toori does the only sensible thing and declares war on the entire world in order to get Horizon back.
That's really as bare bones as you can make the plot, I haven't even touched on the setting.
The setting of Horizon is the far future where man achieved super inter dimensional space flight and a few people achieved some singularity and became gods, which is nice for them. Then something bad happened and they lost that technology and got grounded on an earth that is entirely dead except japan (The "Far East" as it's called, the countries are all real places but they have different names) So everyone has to share japan which sucks booty, especially for the Japanese as they got the worst end of the deal and are basically forced to have no power whatsoever. Toori and the main cast are from the Far East and have to live on a massive ship called the Musashi since there is no actual land for the japanese to live on.
To get their technology back someone came up with the idea to reenact history until they get to the bit where they got the technology and get it again and everyone's problems will be fixed. They do this by following a super bible computer called the Testament that supposedly knows everything that happened ever. This process is broken as shit since they do half of it wrong anyway and people with power just abuse it to get what they want by "misinterpreting" the Testament.
By declaring war Toori is completely disregarding the Testament which also makes a lot of people angry. But the Testament is gay anyway so it's for the best.
Right Enough Of That
One of the strengths of the show is it's large cast.
"bbut hot be, if the cast is large how will they all get air time and debelorpment and what if I don't like them"
Good question Le Great Handsome Oppressor, the answer is they all do and they are all likable. There is not a single character you could possibly dislike, if you do you are a bigot and a whore. Every character also gets at least one moment where they shine, whether it's in battle or some piece of dialogue everyone gets a spotlight except Nenji who is a slime with 3hp. (The show is very video gamey, not like in a gay Scott Pilgrim way but the concepts are like a JRPG)
The main character Toori is as boke as boke can boke. Go google boke. This is anime we gotta use them japernese words.
Toori is a dumbass, a dumbass completely dedicated to saving his waifu. I mentioned earlier about the people that became gods, when these gods are worshiped they grant boons, Toori's god is a god of entertainment, this doesn't come up in the show but it means that Toori is completely invulnerable to any slapstick. There's a fair bit of slapstick and Toori being naked.
Btw he can't ever be sad or he will bodaciously die.
I'd write about the other characters but I simply can't be bothered, there's too many and too much to say about them.
BLLOPPPPPPRRPPPPBBLPLPLPLPL
The visuals are fine, the CG is good though hand drawn would be nicer but Sunrise aren't made of cheddar (lmao jk yes they are they make gundam)
Action is well choreographed and fun to watch, there's a big variety in the fights from hand to hand, to mech battles and massive ships broadsiding each other.
Now the character design... The character design is why I wanted to review Horizon. A lot of the girls have what you would call "Balloon tits" and sometimes Sunrise just draws fucking spheres.
This probably turns a lot of people off when they see it. "Oh this is probably one of those fanservice animos like boku no qwaser rraabhbhlrhhlhkkfl"
I mean that's what I thought when I saw the PV back in 2011, it looked like the dumbest shit ever, and it is pretty dumb, and they do talk about tits a lot, but it's all just fun and goofy
The design of some of the mechs and vehicles is EX rank Kawakami is a genius and I would buy a 1:1 model of the Musashi
Oniichan We're Reaching The Climax
Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon is a show that you should really watch but won't which is why I have written all this. The first few episodes are a little slow and have exposition in the form of characters actually reciting essays, even the director knew this wasn't great but stated that it couldn't be helped and needed to be done so that they could get it going. When I said you will like everyone I wasn't joking, not even just the main characters, you will like all the supporting characters and every villain.
A bonus for you losers on the debate team too! (;)) There are many political debates that are just as fun to watch as the battles, or even more so. even more so.
Yes debates are the perfect hook to end on.
Horizon is now into it's second season which is currently airing, I think if it stays popular it will continue to be animated indefinitely which is good.
I think you can watch both seasons on Crunchyroll in america probably
I think I recall it also being the Anime Network or something
Anyway I'll leave you with the opening animation.
Next time: that one I told exeres I'd do

Toori sure is a good gif
Speaking of downloading, if you do so stay the fuck away from a subbing group called "Hadena", their Horizon subs are the worst thing ever conceived by man
