THE SERIES ONLY GETS BETTER FROM THERE.
Assuming you're talking about Discworld. I have no idea if any other books are called that.
Yeah, they really do. The humour isn't really the heart of Pratchett's work, it's the sympathetic way he writes his characters so vividly. I'd recommend Guards, Guards, if you were looking for another, it's one of his best.

Yes, I didn't hold the discworld books that high until i read Guards Guards! . I had seriously underestimated Terry Pratchett, and when i finished this book i was in adoration at the simple masterpiece i had just read.

You don't have to start with the color of magic, you could follow this reading order guide (like i do, actually) And start with Guards Guards right away.

My favorite book from Terry Pratchett was, so far, Small Gods. I have read it countless times and every time i think it is amazing, definitively my favorite book.

On the subject of Artemis Fowl, i liked all of them :V Though i have to admit that him becoming a better person and less of a villain kind of killed it
It still made an enjoyable and amazing read, don't consider them crap at all.

Loved the books to death, but eventually they did descend into shit territory.
Butler taught me how to be a boss though, so there ya go.

Seemingly invincible enemy?
Get the medieval armor and mace.
Serve enemy back to master dead on a cart.

Yesss, Small Gods was pretty great. While the plot wasn't too special, I adored the undertones about organised religion and general belief systems. It was a very fresh take on things, and a good, clear warning about living your life out of fear and ignorance instead of making conscious decisions.

Also, Butler's got nothing on Jeeves from Wodehouse's works.

I wonder if I can adequately explain the morals of the first book's Artemis Fowl. Especially since it's been years since I've even read it. His final choice, if I remember correctly, was to give up a ridiculous amount of gold in order to have a wish granted, simply for his emotionally troubled mother to become healthy again. The entire book painted him as an evil genius, but even after this choice, he is still an evil genius. He chose to help his mother because he's still a child, and without his father, holds his family dear to him. So even though he made the "good choice," it's still clear at the end of the book that he's going to be scheming again soon. It was a very mature handling of morality for a book that was likely aimed at pre-teenagers.

And then, yes, the later books ruin it by having him becoming a goody two-shoes.

I think one of my favorite books is "The Lies of Locke Lamora"

Basically it's like what would happen if you took the Lord of the Rings setting and put mafia-style gangland violence in them. The titular character Locke Lamora is one of those guys who's more clever than just about anybody he meets and he knows it. I really like the way the author handles a character that's clearly supposed to be smarter than he is. The other thing that the book does fantastically is the fact that you simultaneously cheer for the protagonist, but still recognize that he is not always a nice person.

Also it has some of the most creative cursing I've ever seen
Sound like an interesting enough concept, but I think I'm too inured to the Tolkienesque high fantasy to get into something like that. Does it try to break away from that much?

Yeah, it kind of does. I only really said Lord of the Rings to convey "fantasy". The setting's basically a bunch of city states (the book being set in one in particular) after a nation of psychotic souped-up wizards destroyed a bunch of shit to prove a point

See, that's sounding better already. Sociopathic wizards can improve anything.

I don't think they come into play until about halfway through, but they definitely play a pretty big role.

The other thing is that there's quite a bit of backstabbing double-talk stuff which is another reason why I enjoy it. I've always really liked characters that can make me go, "Oh you crafty bastard"

Yeah, I've been reading through the Sherlock Holmes stories again, and that's a big part of the enjoyment factor there. Not to mention it's just really interesting to see the genuine friendship between him andWatson develop throughout them all.

I'm kinda hopping back and forth between my re-read of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and my re-read of Death Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases

The new Dresden Files book, Ghost Story, releases in four days.

For those not in the know, Harry Dresden is a series about a wizard PI in Chicago's Yellow Pages. He takes on the mysteries that don't make sense to anyone, ranging from how someone was able to tear a woman's heart out of her chest without even being in the room to thwarting a Fairy Queen's plot to ruin the Seelie/Unseelie Court balance to breaking a literal bad luck curse placed on adult film stars that's killing them off.

I particularly love the title character, Harry Dresden, because he is at heart a nice guy, but his nature compels him to be a smart-booty to anything and everything, up to and including Uriel the Archangel, while still being both intelligent and competent at his job. He progresses in a very believable fashion over the books, learning from all his experiences as he spends time saving Chicago, his own hide from formal execution by the White Council, and sometimes the world itself.

I've been meaning to get back to that for aaaaaages now, that was one of my favourites back in the day. I'm unsure if there's another children's book with quite so many puns.
