This is an impression of Mark Hamill’s Joker doing Bane’s speech from The Dark Night Rises.

Looks like Stan Lee's the Human Torch now because he's laying down the sickest burns known to man.

Bawww Peter Parker is deeaaaad why can't they bring him back for 700 more issuuuuues

I like Stan Lee, but everyone is flipping their shit over this. Why not let things roll and see where it goes? Could lead to some good stories. Sure, it's fine when Aunt May dies, but when Pete, who's been around for just as long comic-book-wise dies? CHANGE IT BACK, NOT MY SPIDEY, WE NEED A COP-OUT RESURRECTION OVER HERE.

Peter has been dead before and it didn't cause too much of an uproar, it's the manner in which he is dead, ie not actually dead at all because on of his most hated villains hijacked his body and is now pretending to be him, including working at his old job and continuing all his relationships.

Imagine for a moment that instead of cutting off his own face, Joker decided to skin Batman and wear his pelt like a suit, pretending to be Bruce Wayne all the while, up to and including ordering Alfred around and chatting with Commissioner Gordon, and all of the characters were completely oblivious to the fact that Joker was using a Bat-meat puppet. Would this not upset you? Would you regard this as a good move for the Batman franchise?

I like it because in the end Peter actually won by convincing Octavius, his most hated villain, to not go crazy with spider-power, but to become a hero, and not just any hero, but the one that he's fought for the sheer majority of his life. I like that idea, and like I said, it could make for some good stories. I want to see how this plays out. And who knows? The whining fans could get their wish and have regular Pete back, working at Horizon forever, and while their focus is on resurrecting Spidey, Avengers Arena will get away with killing off (relatively) new heroes.

Also in Avenging Spider-Man 15.1, Octavius is already doing some interesting stuff, like making his web-shooters out of adamantium. Why did Pete never think of that?

And yeah, I know Yost writes Avenging, but I still have faith that Superior can deliver something great.

I think that's what upsets most fans, that the comic seems to insinuate that Oc will be a better Spidey than Peter ever was. There's also the complete and humiliating defeat Peter suffered.

People seem to hate Avengers Arena as well, or at least there seems to be an uproar about it.

I don't read either comic though, just passing on what I seem to be hearing.

It doesnt help that both DC and Marvel insists on using deaths as cheap plot devices, making them nothing more than irritating intermissions.

Still, nice way to end a milestone comic like #700. None of this boring booty "He saved the day and justice will LAST FOREVER!!!" overinflated bullshit.

Im honestly thinking about giving up on mainstream superhero comics. Its just the same overused bullshit over and over, and the same lame giant crossovers that lead nowhere, and stupid reboots and pathetic cashgrabs and annoying writer politics.

I stopped getting DC and Marvel regularly in my late teens. The only comics I have been getting regularly for the past five years or more are IDW's 'Transformers' and Archie's 'Sonic the Hedgehog'.

If you've never read IDW's Transformers comics you wouldn't necessarily realise that the stories are mostly about politics - especially since they wrote the human element completely out and focussed on the robots and their history. The current writers are very good at characterisation and have given a lot of the 'bots some really quite humourous attitudes and quirky personalities (some even have neuroses/insecurities) - I honestly find myself laughing out loud at the conversations some of the 'bots have with each other.

People might bash Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog series - and for some of the comics pre-2007 (or thereabouts) I would probably agree with them, but since then the writers have focussed less on pairing up characters and following their soppy soap-opera romances - and instead have concerned themselves more with better defining characters like Dr. Eggman and what motivates him to do the things he does (for example).

I actually prefer the 'Sonic Universe' side series because the stories tend to focus more on giving (more villainous) characters like Dr. Eggman and the Babylon Rogues their own airtime; Often these stories show that these characters aren't as villainous as initially perceived - better defining the characters as 'real' entities.

I just said that Pete managed to win in the long run by convincing Ock to become Spider-Man. Convincing your greatest enemy to essentially become the one person he hates the most, which is you even but better, is a pretty good way to go out.

And it doesn't feel like Marvel wants this death to be an intermission; it looks like they want to go through with this for real.

Avengers Arena pisses a lot of people off because it takes characters from Avengers Academy, young superheroes, and pits them together in a Battle Royale situation where they have to kill each other. Now THOSE are cheap plot device deaths. Sure, it could be some kind of virtual reality simulation, but the very fact that something like this can get the okay from editors really validates the whole comic book stereotype about death being cheap.

Also DND I greatly enjoy the Transformers comics, More Than Meets The Eye specifically. Shadowplay was a great story arc, IMO. Have you ever read any of Atomic Robo? It's pretty awesome as well.
