Some jerk advertising the revival of his jerky webcomic that's misogynistic and otherwise lame and not funny, apparently

AY YO.
Chill out time.

I do not keep up with many other webcomics, so I have no idea who this dude is supposed to be, but give him a chance to be less whatever-you-think-is-wrong-with-him before you decide that he should just be immediately voted off the island. I know that it seems really easy to just aggressively call out someone who does/says something that that you disagree with (lord knows I have failed to resist the temptation on here myself a few times), but if you think ANYONE on the forum does something that warrants a confrontation like that, report it, and then proletariats will convene and decide whether their actions ON THE FORUM deserve any course of action.
You guys can criticize each other in a civil manner as much as you want, but don't just go attacking people, no matter how rude/stupid/annoying they seem to you. All it does is risk a shitstorm where everyone is unhappy, and you run a much higher than anticipated risk of donning the villain cape.

So be good and let me watch my stories, or so help me, I will get the wooden spoon.

I'm...inclined to side with Madican on a few points, especially considering that Brew kind of implied in his post that disapproving of misogyny and objectification makes this forum "an overly PC cat lady social club". I mean, if you want to mend your reputation then maybe you should start by not saying that? It's not 'overly politically correct', it's basic human decency.

Brew, if you really want to improve, then uhm...maybe start by not putting the word misogyny in scare quotes and realize that including a girl in your comic isn't going to automatically make it non-sexist?

Like, this is quite a bad reputation you're trying to fix. We're talking about a comic where half the time, the punchline was a poorly-drawn naked woman. This is like playing Zoo Tycoon and letting your T-Rex escape and toss people into the air and eat them and then you act surprised when all of your guests run away screaming and never come back.

RikuKyuutu, The Big Cheese, thank you for giving me the chance to defend myself here considering I don't exactly have the most beloved webcomic in the world. However, I'm trying to rectify my comics ill reputation and I'd certainly love input from people other than myself on how that can be done. I'm adding more viewpoints, more diversity and less misogyny as people called it so I can have a comic capable of being enjoyed and having fans. Not an evil intention but maybe a tad selfish, I'd say!

I came here first and foremost because I'm a reader of Ms Tiedrich comic and appreciate her brand of video game humor. I'm always a sucker for people who are modest too and Katie has that in droves. (In fact she is someone I can learn from when writing my self insert!)

So yeah, I apologize if I rustled some feathers but I need to say, my intentions were hardly malicious. I'm a webcomic fan too and work in the entertainment field simply to bring enjoyment to other people. Thanks for hearing me out.

10/10 best comparison. I am glad Brew is willing to admit he's made some mistakes though, even if it's not necessarily addressing all of them.

Edit: He has addressed it, and that's very good. Yay.

Seeing as what the comic originally was, you'll pretty much have to do a mass reform or even completely change it. Don't try too hard to be edgy with your jokes, seeing as that can easily go too far and scare quite a few people away.

Making every other comic sexual is also a bad idea. Even in adult comics, it can be quite annoying.

You might even have to make a formal apology, it's quite obvious that people aren't going to let your past mistakes go unless you really show the effort that you're trying to make amends for them. You'll also have to show that you've grown up and learned since then. But if ya haven't changed, there really isn't much you can do other than fixing yourself and starting over again. But if you refuse to do even that you might just have to quit and move on.

Some people still might not forgive you, whether off the bat or ever, but if you really are trying to make a good comic that really shouldn't matter.

Here's a few pointers I can think of that can apply to any videogame webcomic:

1) Don't try to be like Brawl in the Family, or AwkwardZombie, or anything else. Trying too hard will get you nowhere, and if you proclaim yourself as a spiritual successor people will demand more of you. Just be your own webcomic.
2) Get an actual female friend of yours to make up female characters, or at least try your hardest to accurately represent a female gamer. It should avoid misogynist undertones but doesn't have to be over the top, either.
3) Don't project your own non-game-related opinions too much. A small joke based on your opinion on the new president or something is fine, but start asserting that the capitalist regime wants to rob us of all our values (or imply it in your comic) and you might get people who disagree with you, and therefore begin to dislike the comic.
4) Don't focus too much on original characters or self-inserts. Most videogame webcomics dedicated to a single group of characters that may or may not be based on real people (besides Penny Arcade that is) don't exactly resonate well with some people. People want a video game humor webcomic to be about video games, not you or your OC's quest for love and affection. BUT, occasionally breaking the cycle with small stories about some original characters (provided you made them up and established them from the get-go) or about your real-world experiences is okay sometimes, and can sometimes even be amusing. Isn't that right, Katie?
5) Avoid backlash when responding to criticism. It usually only makes things worse. The proletariats agree: making criticism constructive rather than destructive is the key.
6) Set your own schedule; try to keep it consistent but don't pressure yourself to make a comic every day, or even MWF if you really can't keep that kind of pace. That's all based on your life outside of drawing the webcomic.

Well bear in mind, we're not going to stop people from criticizing you. That's not what this was about. If you fuck up, they're allowed to call you out on it. Tactfully.
Also, dude, I decided to go and read up, and most of his criticisms are pretty on-point with your past behavior. If you turn out to not have changed and insist on being the same character as before, you will run into trouble on this forum. Especially given how if the comic's content involves anything like the previous incarnation that I saw screenshots of, all links will be immediately removed if they are not SFW. Furthermore, advertising is kind of a no no. We weren't going to make a big deal out of it, since leading to other webcomics is what this thread is for, but make sure that you keep it contained.

I hope that you have indeed made those changes for the better, and can gain useful criticism from members of this forum.

Riku's right, and myself--and a lot of other people here, as you have seen--are not afraid to speak our mind when we get our jimmies rustled.

The proof is in the pudding. Show us, don't tell us, that you can make something good, non-sexist, and funny.

Thank you for the advice everyone, it is very much appreciated. Cori, Perplexate and Aquabat's words in particular are helping me shape my writing into something more desirable. I especially like the ideas of apologizing and ensuring people that my comic is on the road to redemption and adding a more female perspective to my comic. (Fortunately, some of the artists I'm working with are women and can give me input some I'm not entirely out of the loop! Acid is the one who suggested adding another female character other than the female leads Monique, Lisa and Nicole)

Oh and Riku just to assure you, a majority of these comics are gonna be SFW and more geared towards video games and various commentary than sex. (Though there will still be occasional innuendo, this reboot will more be focused on good writing and good jokes.)

Oh and Aquabat, I am definitely gearing the self insert antics down, my characters are more going to be utilized for punchlines rather than personal stories.

First and foremost, I would like to offer an apology to anyone who's been offended by my comic and can safely say that I am moving in a different direction in hopes to show people the error of my writing. Thank you for humoring me and giving me the chance to work on this.

Hey guys, here's an update for my comic. I really want to know what you guys think about the humor in this one so I can improve or if you like it just the way it is. Sadly I've already gone through one artist but now I met someone who's equally talented and awesome!

I also decided to make this comic about a special character, Brew's father, who is a campy vampire (a campire) to expand my range of jokes away from video games! I think it'll be funny to check on what a vampire is doing in this modern day and age and how modern society affects him. Its just a little experiment to see if I can broaden my horizons as a comedy writer.

Okay that was actually a pretty cute joke

the art is a little unnerving to me, though, because the nurse isn't even looking at the vampire. She's pulling some kind of thousand-yard stare towards the opposite side of the room or something.

I'm honored you liked it Cori (the joke at least haha) The reason she's staring off into empty space is because she doesn't realize who's blood sample she's about to take!

I must admit this was a stab at something more lighthearted and I realized reviving Vampire Dad was the key to doing it. (Brew killed him during the original run but I decided to bring him back since he's a pretty amusing concept.) Many thanks for the feedback! :D
