Man I dont really read novels, but manga.
But when I do read novels, its either funny or for kids.
Example: Percy Jackson series and This is a Book by Demetri Martin.

But lately I have been reading Fairy Tail(manga) so i guess Ill post about that.
If you are familiar with the rave master it is by the same author.
Fairy Tail is a typical shonen maga with typical shonen fights(they always win but they do it barely)
It's kinda eechi but not HIDE IT FROM THE CHILDREN eechi.
it has been out for a while so there is a good 200 something chapters to read.
The main character is an exporn star named Lucy. And she wants to be a mage cause she found these magic keys and wants to join the mega guild fairy tail. So she is traveling by herself, scantily clad, with a hammock of cheddar. The most potential rape and/or mug victim ever. When she runs into this dood named Natsu, a guy rased by a dragon and eats fire, and his blue talking flying cat. Then shenanigans occur.....so fun to be had I guess..
Also- it is hilarious.

I am currently reading the second book in the Necromancer trilogy by Gail Z. Martin. The story is about prince Martris Drayke, who has to save his kingdom after his brother kills everyone in his family except him. He then learns that he is the inheritor of his grandmother's power as a summoner, a conduit for the living and the dead. Throughout the story him and the companions that helped Martris escape find escape to another country and plan to fight back against the evil brother so he can prevent the evil brother's associate from resurrecting an ancient evil.

There are a few spelling errors every once in a while but overall they're a good read for fantasy doods.

So I've been reading a book called "The Anthologist" by Nicholson Baker.

It caught my eye because I am a huge lover of poetry, and I stumbled upon it as I was browsing a wonderful bookstore in Vermont one day. I started reading it and was charmed so I bought it. Essentially it is about a schmuck of a poet who is trying to write a poetry anthology, but kinda just ends up ranting and rambling about whatever he sees fit. He describes what he's up to, framing a story about a man who is disenchanted with life and goes through his days listless, musing about whatever comes to mind. He's a man of little attentive prowess but unmatched poetic knowledge and adoration.

So far I really like the authors voice. He's a funny guy, and he knows how to make real characters and put them in real places. He's got a knack for details and description. The book is growing on me.

As for other books, my favorite book is "The Road", and it's by my favorite author, Cormac McCarthy. It tells the story of a man and his son traveling towards the ocean after a nondescript apocalypse takes place. What happened to the world was never really explained, and I really appreciate that. There are subtle clues, alluding to mass fire and geographic upheaval, but nothing is ever outright explained. The way it happened is not the issue. What is important are the people left behind. Of course you have the awful, cannibalistic bandits that keep chewed up, living human beings in their basements to snack on later. You also have your desperate survivors, and your half dead wanderer here and there. What I like is that the man and his son are so human. The father displays some medical and combatant abilities, but it's not like the guy's bristling with guns and killing endless amounts of ruthless bandits. He's scared and hungry and just trying to look out for his child. I really am not good at describing things that I really like, so I'll just give it a high recommendation, along with most anything McCarthy writes. I love all of his stuff. Just know that all his shit is unimaginably depressing. Especially The Road.

I purchased Patton Oswalt's Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. I'm about half-way through it and it's half the sort of thing you'd expect from Patton. I've never read a book from Patton before, nor am I sure if he's written another book. I just haven't read much in a while and I thought I'd give this a shot since Patton is one of my favorite stand-up comedians. It starts off with his witty way of wording things that you often find in his stand-up acts, and he goes into some rather gripping stories of his days in a do-nothing town and he makes R.E.M. references at every opportunity. And then he goes back to the witty joke sensibilities from before.

I don't know if the back and forth pattern of his wizard-like way of putting crude humor shifting into past experiences with a Biff Tannen wannabe he worked with at a movie theater and so on is actually a pattern yet. I haven't finished the book. I'm not at all displeased with what I'm reading though and it's kept me going so far.

Oh, Spoony likes Series of Unfortunate Events! I like those books too, though I haven't read them in a while.

I also really like the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. They're similar to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books, but I find the Wheel of Time a lot easier to stay interested in. The books themselves are very long. It's just too bad Jordan passed away before he could finish them--another person had to complete the series based on the notes they found after Jordan's death.
Yeah, I only recently read through them again for the first time since I was a kid. Amazing how much you miss.

I didn't mind the first few Wheel of Time books, but jesus christ, there are just way too many of them - and it seemed to get more and more generic fantasy shlock every time another one came out.

THE SERIES ONLY GETS BETTER FROM THERE.
Assuming you're talking about Discworld. I have no idea if any other books are called that.
Yeah, they really do. The humour isn't really the heart of Pratchett's work, it's the sympathetic way he writes his characters so vividly. I'd recomend Guards, Guards, if you were looking for another, it's one of his best.

Also shit why haven't I been babbling about Overqualified yet. It's a collection of short stories by the guy from A Softer World, composed entirely of cover letters for job applications. It's utterly ridiculous, and utterly brilliant. In between depraved sexual anecdotes and surreal humour is a touching story about a man fed up with the system after his brother's death, his break up with his girlfriend and his aging grandmother. One of the most peculiar books I've read in a very, very long time.

Found a book about 2 WWII destroyers in the pacific. Only they get transported to an alternate world of rival reptilian races in conflict. So confusing, I think I missed a book somewhere.

I think one of my favorite books is "The Lies of Locke Lamora"

Basically it's like what would happen if you took the Lord of the Rings setting and put mafia-style gangland violence in them. The titular character Locke Lamora is one of those guys who's more clever than just about anybody he meets and he knows it. I really like the way the author handles a character that's clearly supposed to be smarter than he is. The other thing that the book does fantastically is the fact that you simultaneously cheer for the protagonist, but still recognize that he is not always a nice person.

Also it has some of the most creative cursing I've ever seen

Did anyone else read the Artemis Fowl series? I'd like to get some opinions from other people regarding my favorite Harry Potter rival.

Artemis Fowl was good for the first one, good for the second, okay for the third, and then garbage from then on out.

Sound like an interesting enough concept, but I think I'm too inured to the Tolkienesque high fantasy to get into something like that. Does it try to break away from that much?

Quality definitely diminished with each volume, but I still enjoyed reading all of them.

Mostly that digging guy. I hated him, and I hated that the author clearly loved him.

Mulch Diggum. Probably the most interesting interpretation of a dwarf I've ever seen.

Agreed.
Loved the books to death, but eventually they did descend into shit territory.
Butler taught me how to be a boss though, so there ya go.

Interesting? Yes.

Likeable? I wish he died.

And Butler. Holy shit, if I ever needed a role model, it would have been him.
