probably super obvious but
the "loss" stipulation is totally every single other instance of this character in every other history are going to die right?
or am I misreading this
Not at all, because that's not a stipulation so much as a fact already defined by paradox space. There's one timeline, the alpha timeline, that is exactly what should happen. Anything else is a doomed offshoot, where everyone dies.
John and Roxy's choices seem to be that, in order to not be doomed offshoots and to continue existing, there must be a price paid. That price seems to be the same for both of them. They get to lose the feelings of loss and despair from their friends dying, and and can see them again, at the cost of their deaths in the new alpha timeline that John has created through his choice.
That's why John's planet exploded. His price was Jade not only watching him die, but also being alone on a ship with those feelings for years.
We're not sure
how Roxy's price will be paid, but it's possible she'll be killed early on in the session, leaving her friends without her for the months that they're trapped in the game.
The upside to this being, they can continue being the "real" versions of themselves, and not just doomed versions. Meaning they have the experiences and memories of the alpha timeline getting fucked up and can make sure it doesn't happen again.
