Plot device.

It's a term I heard somewhere to refer to a plot device that is designed to instantly fill in plot holes, often inexplicably appearing out of nowhere. What I mean is that I don't want Roxy to become Oh hey, we lost the super mega item we need to win the game? I can make another one instantly, here you go!

The "fix anything with little or no explanation" bit is more of a deus ex machina. A McGuffin is just any item or person or whatever that offers motivation to the plot, and serves no purpose other than moving the plot forward. The briefcase in Pulp Fiction, the artifacts from the Indiana Jones series, the unobtainium (I cringe every time I hear that word) from Avatar.

Apparently Wikipedia has a different definition of MacGuffin than I do.

Deus ex machina is more what I was getting at, I guess.

You had it right to begin with. The matriorb is a McGuffin, and if Roxy can conjure one from thin air, then her power would be a Deus ex machina.

So I'm thinking since Condy took those two with her servants, that Jake is needed for his God Tier powers too.

He equips people with Hope.
