It was also filled with teenaged feuds, lolrandom, and other stuff that was really cringeworthy because it appealed "to the kids".
There was good stuff in there yes, but the first season was nowhere near the same as the later ones, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find too many fans that would say it was their favorite part of the series (besides maybe the Red X and season Finale parts).
They
were kids, that was the whole point. The show started with them being teenagers first and heroes second. What were you like as a kid on the Internet?
As time went on they began experiencing a lot of hard stuff that helped them to mature, though they never completely lost their original personalities.
The problem was that it was canned writing and cliche plot devices at the beginning, which is stuff that tends to happen with new series, but definitely didn't win over DC fans that were used to higher quality work (Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, etc.). Static Shock had kind of the same problem. It wasn't until later that you got into some real meat and bones stuff that dealt with the characters growing and felt a bit more original. A Body swap episode (even though I really like that episode and feel it was a strong point for season 1), as something like Cyborg helping Sarasim fight off weird bug monsters and learn that he's not just useful as a machine.
Really, I enjoy almost all of the episodes (though I think the pilot is amongst the weakest), but Season 1 had some issues that were luckily sorted out as things went on (including some elements never seen again, like Slade's butler).
