I know I hire violent street gangs when I want to be subtle

Relatively speaking, hiring goons to be working a boat to be "pirated" would be more subtle than just shooting lightning everywhere.

Shooting lightning was a metaphor. He could have done a lot of different things, almost any of them better options than mixing back in with criminals.

they actually had consequences for a kid that's doing something that really should be left to adults. I'm digging this direction

I get the warm fuzzies knowing Iroh will spend eternity chilling with spirits, drinking tea and generally being a wise old man for future generations.

This season is doing a lot of things right that the previous one messed up. I didn't really think much of Unalaq as a villain but this last episode really shows how very ruthless he is.

I really liked this episode until the end. That whole thing with Unalaq holding Jenora hostage is just something I'm sick of seeing. I know it's a cliché that's never going away, but it's just so old.
"Do what I want or else this person you care about dies!"
"Okay, I know you're not trustworthy or anything, but I'll screw over the entire world for that one person in the vain hope that you'll uphold your end of the bargain. OH WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW, HE DIDN'T KEEP HIS WORD AND NOW EVERYONE IS DOOMED."

Not that I wanted Jenora to die or anything. It's just...it's just...GYAAAAAHHHH
Up until then, the episode was amazing.

I never understood hostage situations in the first place. Most of the time, the only reason the hostage is taken in the first place is because the hostage taker needs something explicitly from the person they're hoping to exploit. What's even worse is when they take you yourself hostage.

"GIVE ME THE CODE!"
"Or you'll do what, shoot me?"
"YES!"
"Then I won't be able to give it to you even if I wanted to..."

The whole thing is about the hostage taker trying to sway the sense of control over the situation into his own hands, where all it really does is give concrete proof that the individual in question is the one with control the whole time.

"GIVE ME THE CODE OR I SHOOT YOUR WIFE!"
"If you shoot my wife, I'll just have the same motivation not to give you the code with the added motivation to kill you myself..."
"DO YOU NOT CARE FOR YOUR WIFE?"
"It's not that, it just seems that you care more about getting your code than me keeping my wife alive, but you were hoping it was the other way around..."

I mean seriously, what would his plan be had he really gone through with killing Jenora? It certainly didn't involve not getting his shit pushed in by Avatar state Korra...

Yeah, it's always a lot more logical to threaten hostages with pain than with death. It always works a lot better to just keep breaking all the parts they don't need in order to do as you tell them.

"Oh, what, you're not going to open the safe? Okay, I'll just keep breaking your fingers until you open it. After all, you only need one hand."

...that totally makes me sound like a psycho, doesn't it?

I didn't want to mention torture for that very reason.

Nick aired the last four episodes of the season today. The finale is on their website.

On the last two episodes of the season.
Wow, Zhao didn't actually die. That was a pretty cool callback to the original series. The ending of episode 13 was shocking. There was something that just felt wrong about Unalaq destroying Korra's connection to her past lives

Korra did pretty well for having part of her soul ripped out of her. I do hope that she can find some way to re-establish her connection with her past lives. That left the everything off with a bittersweet feeling. It is a pretty good season finale though.

I am well impressed with how much better this season's writing is compared to the previous. Though I would have loved to see some more Bolin and Eska.
