Also, that "misunderstood ruler chooses darkness to save his people" angle is just one of several romanticized adaptations of Bram Stoker's Dracula. He was originally just an old, bored conqueror/monster.

Don't get me wrong, I like that angle. Movies that continually push a line between "good and bad" in my face are annoying as hell. I'm saying that Caligula is less "exalted hero" and more "this guy is clearly batshit insane". Making him the elder vampire makes a lot more sense, though from what I've learned of his history "guy who eventually lives as an immortal, undead hermit of darkness" doesn't seem to be the lifelong goal of someone whose favorite activity was "city wide butt orgy".

There's some evidence that the majority of Caligulas worst excesses were made up by his political enemies after his death, but yeah

Watched Treasure Planet again tonight. It's pretty good, but not one of Disney's best.

It was a good attempt at reimagining the old story but was executed a bit poorly. And the thing at the end was not necessary jeez Disney why would you do that

Ugh, she makes me super uncomfortable. She's a creepy upstanding member of society fantasy that the movie wants to make me think is attractive, but I can't get over the fact that SHE'S A CAT LADY.

I don't think that's what her purpose was. She was just supposed to be an alien/mutant that they put in for the sake of a more diverse cast. Plus, the underlying comedic thread of dog vs. cat. I mean, sure, the artists drew her with a somewhat attractive form, but that's just because it was more fun for them to draw.

(Also, y'all be nuts. Sloth and I both love Treasure Planet.)

Sorry, that's not exactly what I meant to say. I mean that she's very clearly supposed to be attractive in the context of the movie, what with her abnormally slender figure and beauty mark and copious makeup and whatnot. I don't mean that audience members are supposed to be attracted to her a la Jessica Rabbit. It's hard for me to get behind the idea that this is the standard of beauty in the movie's universe, and therefore I should want to see her get together with someone at the end(because it's Disney and the beautiful people always fall in love), and the reason I have trouble with that is because SHE IS A CAT LADY.

Jeeze what do you have against aliens Marc?
ugh

The only thing I dislike about Treasure Planet is the robot, and I don't even hate him, I just wish he had less screen time.

They have to keep pushing things back so Genndy will never get the freedom to work on an original project. If I recall correctly he's working with Sony on a contract that says he has to work on some other movies before he can get to do what he wants.
