I thought all the MLP pets were meant to be unique or something.

It just kinda felt lazy that Spike got a phoenix when Princess Celestia already has one.

So I just finished watching a couple of episodes that I missed due to school and stuff. I have to say Twilight's teleportation power is really cool. Also, why does Spike spit out letters from the Princess, is there a spell on him.

I hope the series can explain that one day.

Actually the latest episode was about spike. Even though they never say it exactly in the show it did show that no other dragon can send the letters like he does.
Speculation from fans; when spike was born from twilight's magic overload he was given extra magical powers.
A spell from the Celestia makes sense as well.
