How many have you seen AZ?

Not all of them. But Paranorman needs to be added to this list.

I think I've seen about half of the movies on that list. Some of them I do plan on watching eventually but I'm not much of a movie person so I keep forgetting

I love how Cats Don't Dance is the happiest movie on that list.

Not lightest...happiest...

...or at least the happiest out of the movies I have seen from that list.

It's like dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, your kids really shouldn't even glance at the front cover dark, Cats Don't Dance: a slightly dramatic movie with comedic under and overtones where the darkest thing you'll see is a slight jab at the movie industry, dark, dark, WHY IS THIS AN ANIMATED FEATURE?!, hmm...this one seems innocent eno- god fucking dam- family movie night's cancelled just go to bed!

i absolutely love how i heard about plague dogs and felidae because we had a thread on another forum about "movies you watched as a kid"

and just

WHY WOULD ANYONE LET THEIR KID WATCH THOSE MOVIES

HOLY SHIT PLAGUE DOGS MADE ME FEEL AS SHITTY AS GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES AND FELIDAE CONTAINS LIKE 30 INSTANCES OF "FUCK" AND ALSO SEMI-HARDCORE CAT SEX. YES GOOD.

the "worst" movie i ever watched was All Dogs Go to Heaven and that wasn't even really bad. despite the whole "characters are seen gambling, smoking, drinking, and murdering all within the first 15 minutes" thing. if it came out today i bet it'd be PG-13 instead of G lol

Why do people assume that animated movies are for kids?

Because animated movies are generally advertised to kids.

They were originally intended for adults. But I can enjoy either kind that is "intended" for kids.

What about Iron Giant and Land Before Time? They have some dark moments, but its definetly fit for kids

Well I'm not saying that every other movie is dark, more that Cats Don't Dance is the happeist thing on there. The Land Before Time and The Iron Giant are definitely darker than Cats Don't Dance. I mean shit...the whole "Littlefoot's grandma died" scene is absolutely heart wrenching.

Fixed.

As far as my thoughts on that list:

NIMH, fuck yeah.

Heavy Metal, FUCK YEAH.

*pushes up nerd glasses* it's because in America the first company to really do anything big with animation was Disney, and therefore they dominated the market. Because Disney made family animation and other companies and artists saw that family animation did well, the whole artform in America was majorly family because that's what made cheddar. That's why the Simpsons was such a huge deal in the late 80s because it was a cartoon FOR ADULTS WHAT WOW WHAT A CONCEPT. So in America now we pretty much have two cartoon types which are kid, family oriented cartoons and adult humor cartoons.

Adult oriented animation is becoming increasingly bigger these days though. And even kid-friendly movies tend to sneak in a lot of adult stuff these days.

Yeah, which is really great.

An interesting note is that this didn't happen in Japan, mostly because no one company dominated the early market. That's why anime is on the whole more varied in its themes than western animation.
