Are we having a discussion? I thought Madican was just ranting about Percy Jackson.

Gotta love it when a director says that he changed the age of the main characters of the Percy Jackson movies to 17 years old instead of 11 solely to draw in the Twilight and Hunger Games crowd and because he feels it best suits the "finding-yourself" characterization of the novels. Nevermind that that sort of theme is generally relegated to the ages of puberty since that is bodaciously all about discovering who you are and the changes to make while growing up.

Nevermind that the giant, overarching plot of the entire novel series is all about the big choice when he reaches 16, to either prolong the modern world or end it. Not to mention all the other "liberties" the movie takes to the point where it isn't even the same story anymore.

I could never get into the Percy Jackson books, and the films seem to come across as "WOAH, LOOK HOW MODERN ALL OF THESE MYTHOLOGICAL THINGS ARE NOW" and that's just offputting.

Which is kinda sad because I love greek mythology stuff.

The books aren't much better. Paraphrasing:
"I don't care if he is getting his liver eternally pecked out by eagles, we are not going through with this merger! Oh, hi Percy!" said Apollo as he hung up his cellphone.

I kinda figured, but the movies seem to shove it in your face.

I mean, how many commercials showed off the winged converse sneakers?

The books do not shove the modern aspect in your face. Way to cherry-pick your quotes there Barabba, especially since it's repeatedly stated that demigods don't use technology like computers (normal ones) or cellphones because it reveals their location to monsters.

The books are less modern Greek myths and more ancient Greek myths in a modern land, Kamak. The quests are entirely intact, right down to the prophecies and hoofing it on foot for the most part, and it's all about the medieval weaponry when it comes down to combat. The only time a gun was actually used was by a normal human. Not trying to persuade you to like the books, but I am saying that the movie shoving all the modern stuff in your face is doing its own thing.

could say the same to you.

That's quite some BS about the age changing. Didn't really plan on going out to see the movie, maybe I'll pick it up when the DVD comes out.

Granted, not like they could try to get away with him being young when it took them 3 years between the movies for shooting anyways.

At least the first few Harry potter films came out quickly enough to where you didn't think there was more than a year gap in them.

I get really exited when it comes to animated movies.

I mean really I could not stop ranting about how Sulley's nose looked MOIST in Monsters university.

I also recently watched Secret of Kells under someones recommendation and it turned out vastly different then what I received for it to be, and the diversity of the characters really sort of shocked me for something that's supposed to be set somewhere in Ireland. But the actual animation and the style of the movement of the characters was very pleasing.

I really like watching good animation.

Little Nemo was terrifying as a kid with the nightmare goo.

I remember vaguely when I was little watching When the Wind Blows, all I can really remember is bawling my eyes out.

I read the comic Persepolis, I should get to the movie.

The Thief and the Cobbler is CERTAINLY an experience.

I still plan on seeing Rock & Rule one day, if only for the amazing animated not-Mick Jagger.

Watership down: bunnies murder one another

plague dogs: two dogs have a plague. brits swear at them and abuse them and its SAD.

secret of NIMH: rats can talk, mouse finds help for her family. don bluth is god.

American Tail: mouse emigrates from russian to america but get separated from family. don bluth is god.

When the Wind Blows: Shenanigans involving a toad

The Land Before Time: dinosaur babies get separated from family from the fucking CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. don bluth is god. grab tissues.

The iron Giant: alien robot befriends kid and artist. grab tissues.

Prince of Egypt: moses does things. absolutely gorgeous movie with great music.

Yellow Submarine: drugs.

American Pop: i've seen it but i can't remember what it's about

Coraline: claymation! little girl has a fake family.

Cats Don't Dance: they actually do. cat goes to hollywood to make it big. One of my favs as a kid.

The Hobbit: lol its kind of awful

Brave Little Toaster: household appliances go on an adventure. unintentionally terrifying.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas: rhymes. if you dont know this plot get out

Felidae: cat solves sex crimes. not for kids. kinda weird.

those are all i've seen. which is most of them haha. i'm an animation major and shit like this is my life lol. i unfortunately can't think of any more good suggestions that aren't disney movies or major blockbuster films off the top of my head, except just go watch a bunch of don bluth movies like All Dogs Go to Heaven or Roackadoodle. Don Bluth is god.

i've pretty much seen about all that america has made, or at least what of it is good lol. there's a few i've got in my queue. but any more from canada/britain/france/etc would be really nice since i don't really have access to much of that.
