As an actual physical object? Yes.

If nothing else, i have seriously mad respect for the people in movies like jurassic park who built those puppets and prop dinosaurs. like holy shit that is AMAZING

CG monsters and stuff like that doesn't bug me...what does is stuff that is done in CG that doesn't need to be. like cloth physics. just go buy some silk, it's cheaper than paying someone to make a plane and apply a cloth modifier to it

Light CGI that supported a large amount of animatronics and puppetry. You can tell the difference if you look closely now, but I still think after twenty years it remains one of the best movies in terms of special effects.

Im actually surprised they didnt rerelease it after cramming it headfirst into the asshole of CGI orgies, like they did with Star Wars and ET.

The Star Wars thing is because the Star Wars the originally showed is not George Lucas's version. He had people fight him on the things that became the most iconic. Cue millions of dollars later and he wanted to show the world what "his" vision was in the form of Episodes 1-3.

So it's not that CG is to blame for what happened to Star Wars. George Lucas is. I don't expect Disney to handle it much better now that they have it though.

It probably didnt help that even though the prequels got reamed, they still made infinity billion dollars just by being Star Wars movies, even though the friggin Christmas Special felt more like the original than they did.

But yeah, its too late, Star Wars is gone, all we have left is a glitzed up special effects orgy that looks like a cartoon more than a sci fi epic. Fucking Midichlorians and dewbacks and Jar Jar

OKAY FINALLY SOMEONE HERE IS TALKING ABOUT PRACTICAL EFFECTS VS CGI THANK YOU

I for one believe that at least with this level of computer technology, CGI is just nowhere near as captivating and personal as puppetry and other practical effects. Look at The Thing, that movie was made in 1982 with all puppetry and it's so much more realistic and terrifying and filled with personality than CGI ever could be. Naked Lunch, 1993, every puppet (except for the Yves puppet which Cronenberg admitted was lazy and wish he had more time for) was filled to the brim with personality that couldn't be accomplished even with today's CGI.

To take a more popular movie even look at Little Shop of Horrors. There is nothing about the Audrey II puppets that's fake or awkward.

I love what Pacific Rim did with actual sets and props.

Gotta love it when a director says that he changed the age of the main characters of the Percy Jackson movies to 17 years old instead of 11 solely to draw in the Twilight and Hunger Games crowd and because he feels it best suits the "finding-yourself" characterization of the novels. Nevermind that that sort of theme is generally relegated to the ages of puberty since that is bodaciously all about discovering who you are and the changes to make while growing up.

Nevermind that the giant, overarching plot of the entire novel series is all about the big choice when he reaches 16, to either prolong the modern world or end it. Not to mention all the other "liberties" the movie takes to the point where it isn't even the same story anymore.
