Do you guys think that it would be better to take this to the comic book thread? You haven't been talking about movies very much.

Since that Laika trailer a couple of pages back was taken down,I'm going to link to another video of it. It looks pretty cute, and dang, it looked so good that I thought it was CG at first for a while.

The lead is gonna be played by Bran Stark

Why is that weird? Superhero comics are the most popular comic genre in the US, doesnt mean others dont exist.
It just feels so limited, setting-wise.

Its just a genre, you think every superhero book is like Superman or Spiderman? Read The Boys, Supergod or A Serious House on A Serious Earth and youd see what can be done with it

I read comics. I tend to read more Marvel than DC though, I've read hundreds of X-Men strips in particular. I still think it's a limiting setting and would rather see more experimental stuff.

Doublepostin' cause I just got back from World War Z. It's probably the most generic, bland zombie movie I have ever seen. Go watch 28 Days Later instead, or Children Of Men, they handle the breakdown of society thing way better.

Because he's somebody who knew what the fuck he was doing. He wasn't just some guy who lost his shit when the shit started hitting the fan, he stayed cool, analyzed the situation, and made intelligent choices, much unlike what happens IN EVERY OTHER ZOMBIE MOVIE EVER.

that his family dosen't die horribly sets it so far apart from every other zombie movie it loops all the way back around into interesting.

zombie movies are shit and predictable anyways at least it avoided part of the problem

But nothing bad ever happens to Gerry or his family of any real consequence and I have no real reason to empathizes with this guy who quiet frankly conformably skates his way through the zombie apocalypse while basically everyone else gets glassed by it. He even survives a heroic sacrifice, and ultimately the main characters suffer no consequences, even in situations set up to appear as if they might.
I get that it's a PG-13 movie with no actual attempts at depth, but there is virtually no pathos or potential loss. Even the big moment where Gerry's family's safety is brought into question is dumb because they were sent to what appeared to be a well-fortified refuge camp in Alaska. You didn't know that, but it's still really dumb.

Gerry didn't die despite taking huge risks because he made intelligent risks. He didn't just do risky shit for the sake of moving the plot along. He did everything for a purpose, and that alone made things interesting. Like when he taped the magazine to his wrists, I was impressed. No other zombie movie did I see any protagonist even think to do that, and he did it after having all of the 5 minutes of contact with one of the zombies. He didn't lose his family because he made quick, intelligent decisions. He didn't just sit on his booty and wait for things to happen like the one family did near the beginning who refused to go with him. He also didn't die during his heroic sacrifice because even that was done as an intelligent decision. The only reason he did it at all was because he analyzed how the zombies were behaving. Most of the heroic sacrifices made in every other zombie movie revolves around an initial bad decision. The movie was about analyzing the zombie threat as it encompassed the entire globe, not just average people attempting to survive a typical zombie onslaught.

Even in the book, it was all about how typical, average people made intelligent decisions that ultimately saved their asses. The type of people you were hoping to see, the ones who starred in any average zombie movie, wouldn't have been included in the book at all...because they would have been dead...because they made stupid decisions.

Besides, if we're going to yell at movies for being unoriginal, we can at least not then turn around and fault a movie for NOT following the typical genre formula. That's like yelling at Cabin in the Woods for focussing to much on the secret sacrificial corporation starring Sigourney Weaver.
