Depends on what else they watch - if they're into hard sci-fi or high camp comedy or whatever, but assuming somebody with fairly neutral interests...

Series 1 - I agree that Dalek would be the best choice.

Nothing from Series 2, it's just an arrogant jackass and his girlfriend having fun at the expense of everyone else. Gun to my head, The Impossible Planet, though I'd be reluctant to use a two parter. Tooth and Claw is fairly solid, as long as you take Victoria's words seriously and not brush it off like the Doctor and Rose did.

Series 3 has a few good moments but they tend not to make good introductions. Blink would fail because it barely even has the Doctor in it and would set an unrealistic standard. The three-part finale is obviously too big and too dense for a starting point.

Series 4 I think has two candidates, the first two episodes. Obviously Partners in Crime sets up the geratric antics that were to come in the series, while the Fires of Pompeii shows a bit more of the darkness and the emotional core.

Series 5 - The Eleventh Hour for sure. It's a fraction too long, but otherwise an ideal starting point. Plenty of humour and a solid but not overly demanding plot. Characters introduced properly. Comfortably the strongest of the season openers post-revival.

Series 6 and 7 are far too dense to be a starting point.

I vote for The Eleventh Hour, sure to cause trouble in this Moffat-hating thread.

(for the record, I was introduced on Silence in the Library and watched the rest of Series 4 before going back to the start)

My first episode was Blink, and I loved it. I thought the Weeping Angels were handled magnificently. They don't move when you look at them, and they don't move when the camera is looking at them either - it was this sort of immersion feeling that really got me. And then Moffat went and shat all over his creations in every Angel appearance since then

Also wibbly wobbly exploding hens at 30 paces.

technically i started in the middle of the fifth doctor hah. rented some dvds from the library. i started watching on netflix at Rose because it's the first one they had (though i feel like i missed out on a LOT of the ninth doctor and i'm a disappointed.) it felt like an ok start to me - not a lot happened i guess? but it introduced the new companion...and i guess i'd already seen/known what the series was so it wasn't boring to me? most people i know are like me and want to start at whatever beginning is available to them, even if its probably not the ~best episode ever so i'd just tell them to start at the beginning

i just found out they have classic doctor who on netflix ahh.

The Ninth Doctor started with "Rose", it was the first episode of the revived series.

Also favorite doctors, not in order of preference:
2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 11th.

When it comes to the fan-favorite 10th, I would say he has some of my favorite episodes, but he's not a favorite Doctor.

Edit: Rewatching the Library episodes.

River's wiring herself into the computer, the Doctor just woke up.
Some dialogue I never caught before.

Doctor: Oh no no no come on what are you doing? That's my job!
River: Oh, and I'm not allowed to have a career, I suppose?

How did I miss that the last twenty times I've seen this episode?

EDIT 2: EDIT HARDER:
Tom Baker's first scene as the Doctor.
"I tell you, there's nothing to worry about, Brigadier! The brontosaurus is large, and placid."
"Is this the patient, sir?"
"And stupid!"

EDIT 3: THE EDITING:
Tom Baker's face is so fucking creepy it's like rubber help

EDIT 4: WHY AM I STILL AWAKE HELP ME:
"I don't like 'impregnable'. It's a bit too much like 'unsinkable'."
"What's wrong with 'unsinkable'?"
"Nothing. Said the iceberg to the Titanic. Glug, glug, glug..." *slowly lowers himself down into his seat*

at what point do the jelly babies come in because we all know that's the only reason Tom Baker's Doctor was popular

Ah, I see. I wonder why he had such a short run then? It seems like 10 hung around forever

10 was around forever because he was the best doctor.

That's why.

He shouldn't have left.

I could handle Moffat's shit if Tennant was still there.

I think Christopher Eccleston left the show for a number of reasons, including quarrels with some of the producers/directors and the fact that he didn't want to be type-cast as 'that dude who's the Doctor' the way Tennant has.

Eccleston and Tennant were my favorites. Matt Smith is okay but Moffat's writing makes me dislike the Eleventh Doctor.

Also, one of my favorite episodes is The Waters of Mars. It was great.

By the end of the year 10 and 11 will have nearly done the same number of episodes. 11 will only be behind because of those worthless specials in 2009. Except for the Waters of Mars, which was very nearly Tennant's best episode.

Smith
Eccleston
McGann

Tennant.

I like the Doctor Who gameshow specials. There was that Weakest Link with the main cast of series 2, and now this with assorted actors from the show (and K9):

Sylvester McCoy is like the best Scottish person ever. I wish he was my grandfather. He gets along with Sophie Aldred so well.

Least favorite Doctor is #6. What the hell was going on there??

the nature of the show dictates that every doctor will leave eventually...I've enjoyed 10 so far (I think the last episode i watched was the one with the pigslaves and the evolving daleks which called waaaaaaaaay back to the ninth doctor?) but i still like eccleston better. i think it was maybe his personality? i like snarky protagonists. i'm not sure what my opinion on smith as the doctor will be lol he's definitely not quite as attractive as the last two but i've never seen him act ever/not seen any clips from his episodes so i'm not sure.

How Strax the Sontaran survived Demon's Run and went to live in London with the Silurian Lady whateverhernameis and Jenny:

"I'm not an expert on alien species but you're both women ones?"
"It has been noted."
"Don't you need a man one?"
"NO."
"Am I the man one?"
"NO."
