As you all know I am a connoisseur of culture whose opinions are never incorrect, a select few of you might have clued yourselves in on the fact that I sometimes partake in viewing Japanese animation. In this thread I will, on a fairly regular basis, detail which exciting new shows you should be watching and why. We are currently at the beginning of the summer anime season so it is the perfect time to experience wonderful new things.
"Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita" or "Mankind Has Declined"
Based on a series of novels, Jinrui is set far into the future after mankind has "Declined" due to low birth rates and other vague reasons; civilization is now in a pretty rural state.
The story follows our protagonist "Shujinko" ((TL Note: This is Japanese for protagonist.) Fans also sometimes refer to her as "Watashi" or "Okashi-chan" (Sweets-chan)) who serves as a mediator between humanity the fairies that inhabit the world. Fairies are intelligent and magical; however they are also childish and creepy as fuck. Shujinko earns their favour by making sweets for them to imbibe.
The episode begins with Shujinko arriving in a village after being told to help with the food shortages. She is put in charge of a group of pretty ladies while all the men of the village go out on a hunt, leaving them with the task of "Turning the chickens into meat.” This is where Jinrui throws off its veil of fantasy and post apocalypticism to reveal what it really is, a snarky commentary on modern society. None of the ladies have any idea how you turn a chicken into meat. They eagerly beg Shujinko to show them what to do, while she deliberates over Necessary Murder and the need to kill in order to survive. By the time she is ready the chickens are escaping. So it goes.
It's a mystery.
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita has two main strengths, witty social commentary wrapped up in a fucking surreal world, and it's amazing main character. Everything is presented through her narration and thoughts. She is cold, calculating and pretty badass. Just doing her job in a cheerful but detached and sarcastic way. Mai Nakahara does a wonderful job with her voice.
So yeah, Jinrui is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei dressed up to look like a children's TV show, except everything is even more unsettling.
~~~VIZUERRRLS~~~
Nigga this shit is colorful and I love it. Pastel colors and weird filters make it look like a painting or some shit. (Also Shujinko is cute as fuck)
The animation itself is nothing to speak of, no major errors anywhere but it doesn't stand out as being mad sakuga (TL Note: Sakuga means animation) I noticed that the lines seem to have this kind of jagged effect sometimes. Not sure what the deal is, might be because of upscaling or downscaling from the source combined with the art style. These ain't no sharp booty Kyoani lines that will cut you up and take your cash. Oh yeah the animation studio is AIC A.S.T.A. They don't have much to their name other than Persona 4, Bamboo Blade and some other shit no one really cares about.
To reiterate: Shujinko is really cute.
The Opening Animation:
Don't really care for the OP, the song is some inoffensive J-Pop I guess it's not painful or anything. I don't know what they were thinking with her dancing because it's fucking weird. Maybe that's the point.
The Ending Animation:
This is more like it, stylish and with a wonderful song by Masumi Itou (Also did the Azumanga Daioh ED) the animation is eye candy (HAHA GET IT? BECAUSE THERE'S SWEET EVERYWHERE) and the song is haunting and dreamy. Though her walking animation is kind of awkward, who walks like that?
You can watch Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita legally on Crunchyroll and I advise you do so.
until next time nerds
I read the review. Then I watched the OP. Had I only watched the OP, I'd think the anime was about beady-eyed little fuckers doing pelvic thrusts and multiplying faster than two rabbits with Viagra.
The fairies do actually reproduce really fast, she keeps them in little boxes so that they don't fornicate all night and drown her in fairies while she sleeps.
Next up is "Joshiraku"
In English this translates to "Joshiraku"
Joshiraku is about a group of girls that are training to be rakugo comedians. (TL Note: Rakugo means "Awful fucking puns") Rakugo is a type of traditional Japanese entertainment that involves telling awful fucking puns. If you have much experience with Japanese comedy you will know that 99% of it is also awful fucking puns. The other 1% is shitty wordplay. This is due to thier nation wide hard on for their backwards booty archaic writing system.
When the girls aren't on stage telling awful fucking puns they are in the dressing room talking, talking, talking some more and then finishing off with talking. This show is about talking and does not try to hide the fact.
I'm making this sound pretty bad right? What a shitty premise. That would be the case if it weren't for the fact that all the talking is written by Kumeta-sensei. Kuneta is one of the select few in japan that can tell sort of funny puns. Also he's a genius.
So as expected of Kumeta-sensei the dialogue is fast, witty and heavily laced with political satire. The fourth wall is non-existent and punny wordplay runs rampant.
However this brings us to the only major downfall of the show; we aren't Japanese and do not know Japanese. (Well it's not like this is the shows fault but whatever)
Not only are Japanese puns fucking awful, they are impossible to translate into English. The best you can do as a translator is to insert a new pun that sort of has the same premise. This makes a lot of people mad because you haven't maintained the original Japanese meaning, but if you translated it bodaciously there would be no joke. This show was one that nobody wanted to touch with a barge-pole and it's a miracle that it even got subtitles, but thankfully someone over at GG wanted to do it for the challenge and e-peen. They did a good job all things considered, the insert puns fit and are pretty clever, if you aren't experienced in listening to moon language you might not even notice that they are wrong.
It's not impossible to enjoy something where you don't fully understand the joke due to cultural differences, you can work it out from context and delivery and it's still pretty amusing, but be ready to have a lot of jokes go over your head. (If you've watched Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei then you are probable used to this.)
~~~HOW IT LOOK~~~
Joshiraku is animated by JC Staff of Being-Incredibly-Shitty fame. Though to their credit they have done a lot of great work, it's just that they tend to be hit and miss and like to fuck up on animation budgets and create shitty anime original endings that make everyone super mad butt frustrated.
Thankfully Joshiraku seems to have dodged the bullet and has very nice production values. You might notice that it looks like Toradora and various other JC Staff works, except it's kind of shiny and bubbly. This is due to Masayoshi Tanaka (A JC Staff veteran!!!!! Who, come to think of it, hasn't ever done anything awful.) working as the character designer and only drawing one face, the signature of many Japanese artists.
Look at how smooth this is
Well done, JC Staff.
Regarding the cuteness of the girls, they are all p. cute. I would even go as far as to say that they are mad cute.
Opening Animation:
OPs have this habit of being inoffensive J-Pop that isn't really very interesting, but still not like bad or anything. The "Chin-ton" they sing is apparently the onomatopoeia some traditional Japanese guitar thing makes.
I have no fucking clue why they are on a tank, it's probably a pun.
Ending Animation:
Once again the ED proves to be far superior, composed by the swell guy Hyadain. He probably fucking sung it too. What a guy.
"This show was not meant to be translated. If you don’t speak Japanese, you probably won’t enjoy this show. If you somehow do enjoy this show, you are probably lying to yourself because you like the girls." - GG
