I think I remember the creators saying something about it being Finn's dying thoughts during the apocalypse, like St. Elsewhere but taken up a notch when they were trying to pitch it to people at a ComicCon or something? I don't know how truthful that is, being from a thread on IMDB or something, though, just some food for thought.
