There's a very simple solution to the fear.

Play it during the day with all the lights on, the blinds open, and have someone right next to you just giving you the biggest hug ever.

Headphones, Pitch-black room, all alone.
It scared me SHITLESS a few times and eventually I got stuck so I never finished.

Heck, I think one of the worst parts is...whatever that one room is where you have to make the explosive. That's the part that nearly makes most people quit. If you can pass that, you'll probably pass the rest of the game.
