The system itself is about the size of a Rubik's Cube.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouy ... me-console

So there is this new console that got funded completely ($1,000,000) on Kickstarter in something like eight hours. It's getting lots of support and investors and everything, so it's looking really promising.

Quote:
Award-winning industrial designer Yves Béhar, the founder of Fuseproject and chief creative officer at Jawbone where he designed the wireless Jambox speaker, is fashioning the console and controller. "He is the best designer outside of Apple," says Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman. "He really understands how to build something that is beautiful with high performance that is really affordable and attainable for everybody."

Other big names on board include Minecraft developer Markus "Notch" Persson, who plans to deliver an updated version of his hit game for the console. Indie game designer Adam Saltzman (Canabalt) is another supporter, as are former Microsoft Xbox executive Ed Fries, Peter Pham of incubator firm Science and longtime video game executive Brian Fargo, founder of InXile Entertainment and previously at Interplay, who is also an investor.

Other investors include Jawbone founder Hosain Rahman, Digg founder Jay Adelson, Flixster founder Joe Greenstein, Amol Sarva, founder of cloud software company Peek and Eric Hautemont, co-founder of board game publisher Days of Wonder.

Specifications:
Tegra3 quad-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB of internal flash storage
HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth LE 4.0
USB 2.0 (one)
Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
Android 4.0

That's just the prototype, I believe? Set to launch in March 2013.

This sounds interesting, but I am unsure about it. It may end up like the Phantom, which had the same idea (digital distribution for consoles). However, with that much funding, it may get off the ground.

But if this thing is actually successful, it'll cost a fuckton amount of dollars, i theorize about 800 dollars.

It costs $100 for one, judging by the Kickstarter rewards.

Um
No?
Have you looked at a PS3's specs.

This is less than half the cost of a PS3.

Dedicated consoles hardly need any RAM.

This system is quite frankly phenomenal.

I'm considering buying one, but I'm a bit wary of Kickstarter after all that stuff about safety. Maybe I'll wait to see if I've got enough left after Otakon, if there are any of the $99 rewards left.

They have a quad core cpu, if they only have 1 gig of ram it's not really gonna make any sense. Ram is cheap as hell too, it'd add like, $10 to the price. If they don't have at least 2 gigabytes of ram then consoles are still waaaay behind PC gaming.

They say you can open it up and change whatever you want, and it won't void your warrenty. If I got one of these it'd be simple to upgrade whatever parts I deem unfit.

Looks like an amazing console. I look forward to owning one of these. :)

I don't think they mean that, the wording seemed a bit ambiguous. I think the deal is that modifying the software to run homebrew won't void your warranty, and then mentioned opening the hardware in the same paragraph.
They'll be in a tight spot if they let people dick with the innards without voiding their warranties.

@Malum: No, you don't get it. Games take 2+ gigs of RAM on PC because developers have to account for various builds. Consoles can achieve similar results on a fourth of the memory OR LESS because their architecture is identical across the board. Uniform consoles don't need to be as powerful as PCs because PC games are inefficient. Yes, PCs have passed current-gen consoles. No, a PC is not going to beat a console sporting a gigabyte of memory in the next few years. And when they do beat a gigabyte of memory in a dedicated console? you'd better believe it's going to cost more than $100 dollars.

That's my only concern - this entire thing is too good to be true. I'm reluctant to believe the developers can follow through. This could very well just be capitalizing on Kickstarter's inability to police their projects.

I can't believe that they'll let people mess with the interior and not void their warranty. If someone screws up and ruins their own system by playing around with it, I don't think any company would be willing to GIVE that person a new console.

I think the problem with the phantom was it was ahead of its time. With stuff like Steam, Gamefly, Online, Amazon Instant....and ereasf Origin, it makes more sense for an entirely digital download console to be a thing.

I am skeptical about the 8 GB of internal flash storage. You won't get very far with just that much data. My iPod can hold much more than that, and I think my cell phone can as well. Hopefully once it enters full development they'll consider giving it more memory.

I don't think this thing is going to be used to hold movies and songs, so it should be fine. A single save for something like Dragon's Dogma on Xbox is only a little over 1.5 MB.
