tales of series is great

graces is hella fun even if the protags are so fucking stupid it is painful

abyss is my favorite one i love it forever

xillia's getting licensed supposedly but it's not even a half-finished game and it's incredibly disappointing that bamco released it at all

I've only played Symphonia, and part of Phantasia on PS1. I didn't care for Phantasia that much though fights were way too easy and button mashey. At least in Symphonia you had to combo stuff and dodge.

Favorite is Symphonia. I stopped playing Abyss because on the PS2 it had to load every fucking thing. Open a menu? Load for a few seconds. Get in a fight? Load the fight. Win the fight? Load again for ten seconds or so. Cutscene? Load away!

It was just not worth it when on Symphonia, on the Gamecube for crying out loud, I could do all that nearly instantly. Although with Symphonia I couldn't make the joke I could with Abyss. Namely, that their entire world is Hooked on Fonics.

Ya it had huge problems with loading, if you put yer ps2 upside down it cuts loading a bit..... I dont really know why.

On another note I kinda like symphonia 2.

i never actually had a lot of issues with loading on my game, actually. there were load times but it wasn't so bad.

though on the 3DS version they cut out a lot of the load times and fixed some glitches.

Vesperia's my favorite, with symphonia a close second.
Not sure what the newest one's called but I've heard the combat got dumbed down quite a bit, not sure how I feel about that.

Symphonia was the first Tales game I played, and I loved it to pieces. It's still my favorite of the games. My pet peeve is the lazy cutscene animation and the intentional blurring the game devs made on the edges of the screen (the idea was to make the center of the screen, the 'focus', more noticeable, but it looked horrible in scenes where the characters were on every part of the screen).

Abyss is a really great game too. I've never played Phantasia or Eternia.

I loathe Symphonia 2 with a fiery passion. It left a sour taste in my mouth--the gameplay was littered with unneeded cutscenes, I found both Emil and Marta to have annoying personalities, and I was not very fond of the monster training system at all. I wish there had been more of a chance to fight with the characters from the first game.
Also, the fact that your party would get rearranged every time Marta ran off and left the group was INCREDIBLY irritating. She would leave in a huff for five minutes, then come back, and your formation was reset. Oh, and not being able to free-roam around the map of the world? LAME.
Besides the gameplay issues, I just didn't find the story to be as compelling as the first game.

Me and a friend rented symphonia 2 for shits and giggles a while back.
There were so many flashbacks it's unreal. It got to a point where we had watched the same flashback 3 or 4 times in the past 30 minutes, only 2 hours into the game of a scene that had just happened, we started joking about flashing back to flashbacks during other flashbacks.
And then that fucking happened and we just stopped playing.

Geez I forgot about that.

Yeah you're right. Symphonia 2 had more flashbacks than two episodes of Naruto and Dragon Ball Z combined.

Xillia is the newest, but Graces F is the newest localized. If you're refering to Graces, the combat isn't really dumbed down; it's just a new system.

I do not have a 3DS, nor can I justify buying one at this point in time without a job.
