Does anyone play it? If not, I can tell you the basics... since it's all I know.
There's a bunch of different armies. The most popular armies (in my area) are currently Space Marines, and Orks. Now, there is a couple of other main side races, and about over 50, give or take, "other" kind of armies. Most useless at the moment is chaos daemons and daemon hunters... and witch hunters. Okay, now to go through some other things on why.
Codexs are basically how you tell what stats are on what. To be honest, this is why many a race have become weakened. Why, you may ask? To be able to balance it. Except the balancing has pretty much screwed up the whole system, and you are given the leftovers.
There is a video game, a board game, and some other archtypes like Warhammer fantasy, and the role-play kind of D&D style. The board game is EXTREMELY expensive, your average cost for just ONE unit is like 10 dollars +. You have to be a pretty average fellow and not barely making it by just to get a nice army bought.
Now the game-play. I haven't played the video game, so I don't know. The board game... however... I do know. Each person has a movement turn, then an attack turn. You can move a certain amount of inches, and attack. Now, give or take, you can also stand still and blast away. In some cases, this is good. Others, bad. I'll explain the dice later, but after your movement turn you get to attack people. Every unit gets an attack, and no matter what, you have to shoot. Even if you made a mistake say like 2 inches, it will be ineffective and you wasted your shooting turn. Other things may also go into play, so just bare with me.
The dice is the base of every attack you will ever make. Everything is usually with the dice. Even infantry squads for some reason move with the dice. You roll the dice, and depending on the number, you get to shoot or it will be ineffective etc. To be honest, you have to have a 4+ to wound most of the times. Depending on who you're playing against, too. As a starter, people recommend space marines or Orks because you can basically put all these customizable options on the units. To me, it seems a little stupid because EVERYONE IS SPACE MARINES/ORKS. There's like a few that play other races, but it's annoyyinnggg. Oh, did I mention the highest amount of cheddar you can pay for a single unit is about 1 grand?
The codex has a bunch of fluff, and that's basically all it is. Then it shows you painting options, and what the units look like. Also, it will be vital since it gives you your unit's information, so you know what to use. In time you will know what some of these abbrievations mean in the stats. So just give the game a shot.
Oh did I mention painting? You have to manually paint, build, glue together, like everything. You can paint it however you want, but it's a pain in the booty just to glue everything together. I mean seriously. For little plastic figures, you could actually invest over a grand just for one army. It's that bad. Put on the side fact you have to color each one, it's like your becoming an expert artist. It is a very difficult game, and requires MUCH time and luck just to play.
Games like Annihilation are typically set out as a point system. Every unit has a certain amount of points, and you should try to reach that goal. 1,500 is the standard medium for Anni, but 500 is the lowest you can go. Still, you want a big enough army to be able to maneuver easily. Along with that, everything has special rules to limit the power it has. To be honest, there's a lot about it that is very difficult to map out. If I missed anything, tell me. It's very hard to tell you every single little freaking detail at 2:20 AM.
