I've talked about it for a while, and I've decided now would be a good time to do it.
So for those of you who missed when I said it - twice - I'll explain how this works:
You don't need a Pokemon game to play! In fact,
There is no benefit to actually having a game! Beyond just knowledge, of course. That's because, rather than it being a regular people-connect-with-each-other-and-play-normally tournament, because those SUCK as community tournaments, instead the entire tournament will be played by me, on the 3D Pokemon game, Pokemon Battle Revolution.
Contestants PM me their ideal Pokemon team, including moves and EVs, I create them using Action Replay and load them into PBR, contestants meet up with me via IM and instruct their orders through me. I record it, put it into screenshot form, and add narrator commentary (along with the other two adding whatever commentary they want to give)
You WILL, however, need some method of IMing me. I use - in order of preference - Steam, MSN, Google Chat and Skype. IF you don't have any of those, I'd recommend Google Chat, since it's bowser based (gmail.com), easiest to set up, and comes with a free 1GB file-hosting service (docs.google.com).
Also, most matches will be recorded around Friday evening at about 7:30 - 9:30, but matches can be organised at different times if you want, it'll take a bit of effort though.
...well that was a long-winded explanation. Whoops!
Anyway, rules:
1: All Pokemon
except these [Smogon-list Ubers] are allowed. On that note, DON'T be afraid to use Legendary Pokemon!
2: Rules are:
-You can't have two of the same Pokemon on a team.
-You can't have two of the same item on a team.
-You can't have a move on a Pokemon that specifically increases your Pokemon's evasion. Moves that increase it as a chance side-effect are still allowed.
-One-Hit KO moves (such as Fissure) are not allowed.
-Event-exclusive moves are NOT allowed. This is really for convenience sake than for competitive balance.
-Certain move combos aren't allowed if they're deemed too cheap! Since there's no easy list of what's deemed cheap, and they're very few, I'll just PM you if there's a problem. (an example cheap moveset is Belly Drum [reduces your health by 50% to power up attack by 300%) in combination with an always-attacks-first move)
3: There's going to be a sort of qualifier set first, before it turns into a knockout. As in, people are divided up into groups, and everyone in a group plays each other once, and the best one(s?) in each group play against each other in a you're-out-if-you-lose-once setup. How many groups and how big they'll be depends on how many are playing. For qualifier matches, you use THREE of your six Pokemon (decided at the start of the match), but for knockouts you'll use all six.
4: Keep in mind that your team details will NOT be made public UNTIL you demonstrate it in a battle. In other words, if you only send out two Pokemon in your first battle and they only use three of their four moves each, the other 4 Pokemon and the remaining moves will still be hidden. The same applies to items, except that any always-active items will always be revealed at the end of the match.
5: The Pokemon you should PM me with should have:
Pokemon Species
Nickname, gender, and Pokeball (all optional, 10-character limit, nicknames should be lowercase unless specified otherwise, cherish ball and HG/SS balls are not allowed)
Moveset
Held item
Ability
Nature (
Reference list)
IVs (optional: only specify if you DON'T want an IV to be at its highest, 31)
EVs (remember you can divide 510 EVs across all six stats, having no more than 255 EVs in a single stat. All Pokemon will be Level 100, so EVs won't have that big an influence. Alternatively, if you're not sure about how EVs work, you can just ask me to divide them up how I'd see best)
6: This IS meant to be a for-fun tournament, so don't be afraid to put yourself at a disadvantage for the sake of entertainment/sportsmanship/variety. Picking a novelty team, such as all Pokemon having one type, is the most popular thing at the moment. At the same time, however, don't feel pressured into not being serious if you want to be.
I think that's about it. Oh, and do remember that you'll be playing against PROPER teams with proper movesets, so simply picking Pokemon only intended to deal the most damage will leave you open to team combos, weather attacks and Spikes (tip: Rapid Spin can be very helpful in competitive matches).
