I think that this one subject that I can actually say that I disagree with the entire internet about.
My favorite characters in Melee were Roy, Dr. Mario, Mewtwo, Game and Watch, Young Link, Gannondorf and Falco. Well, Falco only because he's my favorite character from the Star Fox games.
But OTHER than Falco, the characters weren't just clones. Players often fail to realize the great difference minute details make, such as running speed or attack range. I'd like to use Roy as an example.
Just take a look at him. First of all, his sword. Makes fire. While Marth's attacks leave the opponent still close, and beg for follow up attacks, Roy's sword is powerful enough to have a "let the enemies come to you" gameplay aspect. Act vulnerable, then be quick to the draw. Secondly, looking at Roy's highs and lows, he has powerful attacks with great range, but moves slowly and has unorthodox motion attacks, such as aerial attacks and running attacks. In this sense, Roy is more comparable to Donkey Kong than Marth.
The same idea applies to every other "clone". Dr. Mario uses powerful aerial attacks to juggle enemies, but being airborne at the same time as your opponent creates the illusion of, "hey, maybe I can hit him back no--Oh shit nevermind" With a full 360 degrees of aerial attacks that can all send the opponent flying, you never know where to approach him from.
Ganondorf actually isn't a very well designed character, mostly because he sacrifices attack range, and can only hit enemies when they're right up in his freaking grill. I would prefer him to be redesigned to either use his Ocarina sword that he keeps showing off, or use two swords like in Wind Waker.
And that just leaves Mewtwo and Game and Watch. They aren't necessarily my best to use, but they're fun. Also, I'd just like to point out that Game and Watch is video gaming's heritage. Plus, it's pretty awesome to see him pulling random objects out of his invisible sleeves, and beating the crap out of the most advanced characters, such as Samus. xD
