Warning: This game will delete a random file for every alien you kill, so for safety reasons, I'll not link it.

Quote:
Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game is created based on a random file on the players computer. If the player kills the alien, the file it is based on is deleted. If the players ship is destroyed, the application itself is deleted.

Although touching aliens will cause the player to lose the game, and killing aliens awards points, the aliens will never actually fire at the player. This calls into question the player's mission, which is never explicitly stated, only hinted at through classic game mechanics. Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land?

Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon an awarded for using it, that doing so is right?

By way of exploring what it means to kill in a video-game, Lose/Lose broaches bigger questions. As technology grows, our understanding of it diminishes, yet, at the same time, it becomes increasingly important in our lives. At what point does our virtual data become as important to us as physical possessions? If we have reached that point already, what real objects do we value less than our data? What implications does trusting something so important to something we understand so poorly have?

KILLING ALIENS IN LOSE/LOSE WILL DELETE FILES ON YOUR HARDDRIVE PERMANANTLY

What are your thoughts on this? I mean, this game is philosophical in a way, but is this guy just *bleep*ing insane?

Not mentioned: you have to delete system32 in order to launch the game.

I've never heard of this game, and if he detailed that it'll delete files at random, then its your own fault if you download it. But if they guy didn't let you know, then its a virus and should be reported as such. To be honest, it should be reported either way.

I googled it, just to see what the site looks like. There's a highscore list there, the current best killed 4912 aliens.
Can you imagine just randomly deleting almost 5000 files from your hard drive?
I can't believe people are actually playing this.

There's also an in-game video there, the game itself tells you right at the beginning that it will delete files from your hard drive.
So at least it shouldn't be possible to send this game to people and make them delete their stuff.

I think that's a really effective way to show a message, actually. Would I play it? I'd have to look into it more. If it'll only delete files if I kill aliens, and they don't attack me, does that mean I'm free to do whatever I want as long as I don't kill the aliens? In which case, is it then worth it?

Sounds like a fun thing to play if you are planning on formating a hard drive.

I don't know. Just going off the description alone, this game is both interesting and an abomination. I mean, nobody with a stable mind would willingly play a game that will delete files from your computer permanently. I really don't know what to think of it.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

S, its secretly Global Thermonuclear War, but on your computer. I LIKE THIS.

No but seriously, unless you're going to rash your harddrive, I would not suggest playing it.

I hear that Windows Optimizer will make that game run faster.

Why don't you provide a link so everyone can download and run it?

I wonder if the game can delete itself.

Any and all 'messages' to go along with this are complete and utter rubbish. It's a program that deletes files, while also letting you play a minigame in the process; that's the entirety of it. Saying it represents a lesson is like accidentally spilling a can of paint on a canvas and calling it art!
