I'd recommend doing the tutorial first, since it teaches you all the basic controls and such. For your first character, Minotaur/Troll berserkers are typically the easiest to play.
EDIT: Oh, one more thing. You'll be dying quite a bit, sometimes within the first 2 levels if you're unlucky.
