You guys can comment about this, but I doubt I will be able to hear you over the sound of my skull and hand bones shattering under the sheer force of the facepalm I'm doing.

There are so many things wrong with that list it's unbelievable. How is Super Mario Kart even CLOSE to the most influential game?

Final Fantasy XII is higher on the list than Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy XII is higher than Street Fighter II! Even people who have no idea what the hell they are talking about should make that mistake.

My opinions on how the games did/didn't influence the gaming industry. In their order. Which I strongly don't agree with.

1. Super Mario Kart (In fairness, it did make a huge mark on the wacky racing and mascot games)
2. Tetris (No question)
3. Grand Theft Auto (Also no question)
NOT Super Mario World (SMB3 was the one that had the major influence of its type, not SMW)
5. Zelda Ocarina of Time (Ehh... just about had an influence different to the one set by Link to the Past)
6. Halo (Influence FPSes big-time!)
NOT Resident Evil IV (Again, the previous games set the base influence)
NOT Final Fantasy XII (Iunno what they were thinking here. I mean, sure, turning a singleplayer game into a multiplayer one sounds rather unique, but it didn't influence anything)
9. Street Fighter II (Influenced fighting games quite a bit)
10. GoldenEye (No question)
11. Super Mario 64 (Very much so; especially in terms of 2D to 3D conversion)
12. Tomb Raider (Just about, for a minority of games.)
13. Metal Gear Solid (Enter 3D stealth games stage left)
NOT Call of Duty 4 (While a very popular game, it didn't make an influence the way the similarly-popular CS did, mostly because it just re-used what other games already had)
15. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (If only for the way they did the 2player parts; Sonic1 had a much greater influence)
NOT GTA San Andreas (It's the most popular of the GTA games, but doesn't make an influence the other ones didn't already)
NOT Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Naaah, nothing to see here)
17. Super Mario Bros. (No question at all!)
18. Zelda: A Link to the Past (Big influence on adventure games)
19. Gran Turismo (Umm... yeah, for the stock-car-type racing games)
20. Final Fantasy VII (Big yes)
NOT Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (Again, nothing the previous games didn't already do)
22. The Orange Box (Just for TF2)
NOT Lego Star Wars Complete Saga (Had it been Lego Star Wars 1, I would've said yes. The complete saga is a port with Wii controls. No news there)
24. Tekken 2 (Rather large influence on 3D beat-em-ups. Moreso than its predecessor)
25. Wii Sports (It'd make a lot of people angry to say so, but this one definitely did have a huge inflence)

26. Pokemon Red / Blue (Rather huge inflence on RPGs there)
27. Guitar Hero (A VERY slight influence, it's the one responsible for starting the bandwagon on mock-instrument games. Which means Rock Band, Wii Music, and a whole bunch of crappy shovelware)
NOT Project Gotham Racing 4 (Nothing new here whatsoever!)
NOT Super Mario Galaxy (It hasn't made any sort of an influence to gaming. It might, in a few years or so, but not now)
30. Resident Evil (Zombie games)
31. Ico (Very large influence on graphics!)
NOT Chrono Trigger (You'd swear from it's popularity it would, but it doesn't influence anything other than opinions)
33. Gunstar Heroes (Slight influence on side-scrolling games of its type. Very slight)
34. Soul Calibur (Helped start the 3D beat-em-ups wagon. Not as much as Tekken though)
35. Advance Wars (A rather big influence, despite it using a common game system)
36. Ridge Racer (Helped start the race-in-regular-cars wagon)
37. Super Metroid (Yesh)
NOT Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Previous castlevania games, yes. Not this one though, it's too far in)
39. GTA Vice City (Had a very slight bit more influence than GTA3)
NOT BioShock (It's likely to for future games, but there's no real games that could be said to be based off of it made yet)
NOT Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Again, nothing new)
42. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (It made a very small influence for showing adventure games could be made on such handhelds spectactularly well)
43. God of War (ONLY for influencing the "loads of gore and brutality and sex is awesome" games. Which is one of the reasons I hate this game)
NOT Sega Rally Championship (umm... an influence, but too small to be on this list)
45. Starfox 64 (Very large influence on flying games)
NOT Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Naah, it has some common idea done very well, but nothing really new)
47. WarioWare Inc. (Minigames 'ho!)
48. Saturn Bomberman (mmm... alright, yeah, it does in terms of both showing how having loads of wacky characters can make a game sell much more, and in terms of online play in consoles)
NOT Crash Bandicoot (You'd swear it should, but no, there's nothing actually influential here)
NOT Outrun 2 (again, nothing new)

Games in dire need of being on this list:
Final Fantasy 1 (Biggest influence in RPGs ever!)
Pong, Pac-Man and Space Invaders (Influenced the start of gaming altogether)
Donkey Kong (Influenced the start of platformers)
The Legend of Zelda (Influenced the start of adventure games)
Super Mario Bros 3 (Influead of SMW on the list)
Sonic The Hedgehog (Influead of Sonic2 on the list)
Metal Gear (Well, only rather low-down the list. Influenced stealth games for being one of the first of them, but not as much as MGSolid did)
Super Smash Bros (Strongly influenced mascot-based games)
Mega Man (No question)
Counter Strike (Had a tremendous effect on realistic FPSes)

Please tell me I didn't just make a huge post only to find out that nobody actually understands the concept of a 'videogame industry'...

That's XI your thinking of. XII was alright, but it was just another final fantasy in the series otherwise. It's real claim to fame was that it removed the random encounters, but that wasn't absolute innovation either.

Ahhhh, right, my bad. In that case, there's a good chance that it's the guys thinking that it could have a huge influence in the future.

It still doesn't deserve to be on the list. Or, at least, I hope it doesn't. The only influence it would be able to bring is the concept of the game playing for you (gambits), as there are many RPGs without random encounters.

What, no mention of Half Life?

Fuck you, Guinness.

The book, not the beer.
