What is Touhou?

The Touhou Project (東方Project Tōhō Purojekuto, lit. Eastern Project) is a Japanese series of top-down bullet-curtain games made by the one-man developer Team Shanghai-Alice. The sole member, Jun'ya Ota (ZUN) is responsible for most of the graphics, music, and programming. Notable exceptions include three fighting games co-produced with Twilight Frontier.

Besides games, ZUN has also produced music CD's, books, and comics. Also notable is the prodigious amount of derivative works, ranging from music, to art, to videos, and even to fan-made games.

I've heard the music was good?

One thing that the series is well known for, and also brings many people into the series, is the originally composed music. Some of the more well-known original songs are:

Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion

U.N. Owen Was Her?

Doll Judgement

There's also a very large amount of doujin music, more notable arrangers including IoSYS, Silver Forest, and dBu.

Tell me about the PC-98 games

Image

ZUN's first foray into making games resulted in five Touhou games for the PC-98. While they may be a little unpolished, the charm still shows up in the music and bullet patterns. The five games are:

TH01 - Highly Responsive to Prayers
TH02 - Story of Eastern Wonderland
TH03 - Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream
TH04 - Lotus Land Story
TH05 - Mystic Square

What about the Windows games?

Image

From Mystic Square onwards, ZUN started programming for Windows, starting with TH06 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and instead of improving little by little, mechanics would improve by leaps and bounds. They are released at a rate of about 1 per year, and currently the most recent game is TH13 - Ten Desires.

There are 8 "main" games, focusing on top-down bullet-hell gameplay and all having 6 stages and one EXTRA stage, each with its own mini-boss and boss. The Extra stages are unlocked by completing the main game under certain conditions. Each game has 4 difficulty levels, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Lunatic.

TH06 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
TH07 - Perfect Cherry Blossom
TH08 - Imperishable Night
TH09 - Phantasmagoria of Flower View
TH10 - Mountain of Faith
TH11 - Subterranean Animism
TH12 - Undefined Fantastic Object
TH13 - Ten Desires

There are also 6 "decimal" games. These games have new mechanics and play differently from the other games. 7.5, 10.5, 12.3 are the fighting games.

TH07.5 - Immaterial and Missing Power
TH09.5 - Shoot the Bullet
TH10.5 - Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
TH12.3 - Touhou Hisoutensoku
TH12.5 - Double Spoiler
TH12.8 - Fairy Wars

So where should I start?

If you ask anyone, they'll probably tell you that you should start with Imperishable Night. This is best if you have no experience with SHMUP's, as it is generally seen as the easiest. My personal preference is Ten Desires.

And what is the point of this thread?

To talk about anything touhou-related. It's a place to post any touhou art, arranges, experiences, comics, theories (to a reasonable extent), thoughts, and news. And mainly, to keep it out of every other thread.

SA is kicking my booty six ways from Sunday on Normal. Can't get past Satori.

Meanwhile in MoF, still can't beat Kanako on easy.

I was so close to clearing UFO on easy, even got to the last stage in one coin. Ah well.

Working on TD on normal. Just need to stop dying to stupid stuff.

It's a Desert Eagle refitted to accommodate the small portable singularity that Marisa uses to power her magic.

There's a story behind this. When I first saw Marisa using "master spark", my first reaction was, of course, glee. Then I wondered to my friend -- "How does she get the power for that? She must contain a portable singularity inside that Hakkero thing she carries." My friend balked saying "You just want her to be more powerful than she really is. I mean, a black hole??" To which I replied "Yes."

Indeed they do.

I can't remember how I found out about Touhou. I think I saw it on a forum board once and started reading into it. Didn't become fully invested until about 2 months ago.
However, I had heard U.N Owen was Here a long time ago. I just didn't know what it was from.

I tried doing Lunatic in TD. They give you 9 continues so I made it to stage 4. I bomb spammed.

Also:
I've completely fallen in love with SA and TD's soundtrack.
Notable examples include (excluding Okuu's Theme since it was already posted):
Koishi Komeiji's Theme - Hartmann's Youkai Girl
Satori Komeiji's Theme - Satori Maiden ~ 3rd eye
Lullaby of Deserted Hell
Mamizou Futatsuiwa's Theme: Futatsuiwa From Sado
Yoshika Miyako's Theme: Rigid Paradise
Seiga Kaku's Theme: Old Yuanxian (and personal favorite of TD)

I'm not usually big into the arrange scene, but I just listened to a few tracks from that album, and they all sound pretty amazing.

Anyway, I'm listening to this:

I can't think of another touhou song I've liked so much.
