Yooka-Laylee KickStarter

Image

Yooka-Laylee (previously ‘Project Ukulele’) is an all-new 3D platformer from the creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. We’ve come together to form Playtonic Games and create a spiritual successor to our most cherished work from the past!

Our new heroes,
Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie. Let’s collect some golden trinkets!

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Alright enough with the fancy editing:

KickStarter took off like a rocket and hasn't slowed down. Stretch goals reached are:
£175,000 - PC, MAC, Linux release on DAY ONE (console releases to follow)
£275,000 - A unique and epic boss battle on every level + awesome boss music
£330,000 - Pre-final boss quiz show challenge state, à la Banjo-Kazooie series (so remember the names of the characters you talked to once in that ice level)
£395,000 - Transformations into 'unexpected things' with unique controls and abilities
£435,000 - A mix of 2.5D and 3D minecart sections and not limited to just mines
£535,000 - Local co-op "buddy" mode
£665,000 - 2-4 player local multiplayer VS mode with 4 unique games
£715,000 - Professional translations to French, German, Spanish, and Italian + extra languages voted for by backers
£775,000 - Exclusive character designs from ex-Rare guest artists
£875,000 - 4 more local multiplayer game modes
£1,000,000 - Simultaneous Wii U, Xbox One, & PS4 releases on DAY ONE
£1,100,000 - N64 shaders option + end credits "GK Rap" by Grant Kirkhope
£1,200,000 - Developer walkthrough and commentary video
£1,500,000 - Orchestrated music
£2,000,000 - Free DLC to be available for all sometime after the game releases, additional funding towards polishing the game to the Nth degree

So former Rare LTD developers have formed their own company and are making a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. Unfortunately it legally can't be Banjo-Threeie, but here's hoping it ushers in a second golden age of 3D platforming! Also, if Nintendo picks them up...

Maybe DK64 HD?

Big Red Button had Ex-naughty Dog employees, but these guys apparently look like they know what they're doing, so we'll have to be patient and wait.

I am dreaming of the day that Nintendo announces their contract with Playtonic by having a press conference.
It would go like this:

Massive auditorium packed with journalists.
Lights dim, chattering stops
A voice echos from the speakers: "In 1999, Rare LTD produced one of the Nintendo 64's greatest hits. Today we would like to formally announce our new partnership with Playtonic Games, a new development studio by the people behind Rare in the 90s. And for their first Wii U project..."

DK

DONKEY KONG

DK

DONKEY KONG IS HERE

And then Reggie in a DK suit slides down a rope from the rafters and break dances on stage or something.

But Donkey Kong doesn't wear a suit; he just wears a tie.

Everyone begins writing down their new article right on the spot about how Nintendo's CEO has lost his mind.

On one hand, Reggie's career is over

On the other hand, perhaps the greatest marketing ever.

They finally revealed the starring characters of Project Ukulele!

They are called Yooka (chameleon) and Laylee (bat) which is silly because ukulele

I think the game is officially called Yooka-Laylee now? It IS supposed to be similar to Banjo-Kazooie, after all.

These two look cute together, I would love to see some full voice-acting for this game, since I feel platformers can benefit from the idea.

If done well, of course, lets not make this the next Sonic Boom. Also, option for mumbling like in banjo kazooie like in A hat in time to please the hardcore fans.
