I was going to post this in the 'What do you like to play?' thread, but it's getting a bit off topic, and by gum, I want some attention.

So I was hopping around the internet in search of some explanation for why the Wii's Virtual Console does not include Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, which are pretty much the forgotten generation of video games at this point (shut up Atari, no one wants to hear your bitching). And it hit me.

The Nintendo DSi. Specifically, the Nintendo DSi and its use of original downloadable content for sale in exchange for a currency called Nintendo points. In other words, it's a clone of the Wii's Shop Channel.

At this point, some small games have been released (in Japan) or announced, such as WarioWare: Snapped!, a game that uses the DSi's camera.

There has been no indication of it from Nintendo themselves (that I know of), but what I'm insinuating here is that maybe Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles will be available on the DSi, not the Wii. This is just an intuition. It seems like a logical step for Nintendo, but I have no idea why they haven't already started.

So, if I'm wrong, then that just sucks. Continue to complain and bitch about not being able to play Super Mario Land. But if I'm right, then I have good news and bad news:

The good new is, woo-hoo, we can play Game Boy games again!

The bad news is, all you folks who vowed not to buy a DSi, well lookie here. This is why I think it'd be a logical step for Nintendo; new players are attracted to the fancy new features, and "hardcore" players are attracted to the backwards compatability. Everyone and their grandma will buy one.

Discuss the possibility and result of Nintendo taking such action. Failing that, discuss the DSiWare in general; refer to the link at the top for a list of DSiWare games and applications.

I don't know if my eyes are backward compatible for Game Boy and Game Boy Color screen resolutions.

I don't think I'll be getting a DSi even if it does have Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles.

Super Mario Land 2 and Tetris were pretty good, but I don't really have a huge desire to play them again.

This is, barring a handful of epic games that I must have that demand the DSi instead of the Lite, the only way Nintendo could convince me to buy a DSi.

They could put Game Boy Advance titles on there too, and it'd make up for the fact that the DSi doesn't have GBA slot.

I still won't be buying a DSi, though. At least not for a while. My Lite is fairly new, and I still have a GBA SP that works well enough.

Nintendo wouldn't do that.

That would be mean.

I, personally, haven't owned a handheld more advanced than a GBC, and I have only played a DS at GameStop. If presented with the chance to get a DSi, and Nintendo does decide to release the olde GameBoy games, I would gladly take it. The no-GBA-slot dilemma wouldn't affect me quite as much as the next guy, so even if they don't re-release the GBA games via "DSiWare" I would get it.

I wouldn't put it past them.

Not after E3 last year.

You know, since it has an SD card slot so you can play games with the SD card slot, it could seem theoretically possible for someone to say, download a hacked DS game onto your SD card and then play DS games for free.

Ohh, but that would be unethical...

This WOULD actually be a smart thing for them to do, but who knows if they'd go for it.

Also.
If you really want to play a GameBoy game, there's always emulators.

I think Nintendo ran out of it's "original" ideas.

I believe Nintendo has methods to prevent this. Can't remember what, exactly. I should hunt down that article.

It wouldn't make much of a difference to me if they did that, as my PSP has custom firmware anyway, so I can just play GBA and GBC games on that. Plus, I hate how companies keep rehashing the same system instead of actually making a new, better one and expect us to keep buying them, so I refuse to support the DSI.

Wouldn't the fact that it has a camera, internet, music playability, bigger screen and all that jazz make it newer and better?
