Turtle Rock Studios is making a new game called Evolve, where the focus is on a mix of co-operative and competitive multiplayer. It's coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC

The game takes place on the Planet Shear, where colonization efforts are being led by hunters, who help rein in the local hostile wildlife. However, 50 years into the colonization, bigger and more powerful creatures begin appearing, and since traveling to Shear takes years, the only people who can help are the hunters.

The game supports up to five players. The main mode is Hunt mode. Four players take the role of the hunter, while the other player takes the role of the monster. If a game doesn't have a full player roster, then AI bots will fill in those roles, and palyers on the hunter side can switch their control to one of those AI characters to take care of business if they're not doing a good enough job.

Unlike Left 4 Dead, the human player characters are unique classes. Also unlike Left 4 Dead, there are more than 4 player characters, and while each character in a specific class has the same basic class ability, the rest of their equipment is unique. Every hunter also has a jetpack, which makes the environments easier to navigate and double tapping the jetpack button/key will let you perform a dodge move.

The first Medic character is Val, and she comes with an Area of Effect health burst along with a medgun to heal other players and revive them if they become incapacitated. She also comes with a tranq gun which highlights the monster's movement and slows it down for a little bit, making it easier to track. Val also has a powerful sniper rifle with the added bonus that, whichever spot she hits on the monster gets painted as a bullseye and other players can hit that bullseye for bonus damage against the monster.

The first Assault character, Markov, comes with proximity mines, an assault rifle and a close range lightning gun. The mines are useful for booby trapping areas of the map you don't want the monster to get into. The assault class' basic ability is a temporary invincibility shield that comes with a long cool down time.

The first Support character is Hank, who comes equipped with a laser cannon that emits a constant beam, and temporary shield that lasts for a few seconds that you can use on other players, but not yourself. Hank also has an orbital barrage ability that can be used to control the monster and keep it away from a place or a player for a few seconds. The support class has a cloaking ability, which let's you run away in a pinch.

Griffin is the first trapper, and the class comes with a "mobile arena", a temporary containment field to keep the monster (and the Trapper) in one spot for a little bit. Griffin also has a harpoon gun that tethers you to the monster briefly, keeping its forward movement restricted. Griffin also has a basic SMG and sound spikes which can help track the movements of the monster. One of the other unrevealed trappers has harpoon mines which can be set up in advance.

Despite there being multiple hunters, you need one of each class to start a match; you can go in with all Medics or Assaults. Hunters also have unique perks which are unlocked by playing as that specific hunter, and then those can be used interchangably on any of the hunters regardless of class.

There are also multiple monsters you can play as, with each one having their own special designs and abilities. At the beginning of the match, you pick your first two abilities and unlock two more as you evolve, one at stage two and one at stage three. The monsters objective in Hunt mode is simple: grow more powerful by consuming the NPC wildlife, of which there are many varieties both in size and strength, and then either kill or incapacitate all four players at once (players will respawn at a dropship if there is at least one player is still alive and not incapacitated) or complete an objective, such as destroying a shield generator and killing NPC civilians hiding inside that area.

NPC animals range from powerful creatures to small animals, as well as man-eating plants. The more powerful ones can be used to either the hunters' or the monster's advantage, where you can trick or get tricked into provoking them. There are also special elite monsters that, when killed and looted, can give powerful temporary buffs.

The first monster is Goliath. It's fairly straightforward with a basic set of abilities, some of which are taken from the special zombies from Left 4 Dead. There's a charge attack which knocks down and hurts enemies, a rock throw attack, and a sneaky pounce attack which can only be activated from stealth mode (which is used to keep silent unlike regular movement at the cost of speed) and requires other hunters to free their pounced ally. The Goliath also has a leap attack which lets you jump up and then slam down with a shockwave, and fire breath.

Evolving makes the monster go into a coccoon for a short time which leaves it vulnerable, but once it emerges it becomes bigger, stronger, and has more health.

There are other game modes besides Hunt mode, but they haven't been revealed. The game is set to release sometime this fall.

The Trailer has the best cover of "Mother" I've heard.

This game looks like it may be pretty awesome. It has a great concept at least.

Here's a video with some actual gameplay in it and an announcement for a fall release date.
