Well, lately I've been revisiting all of my MGS games, and MGS2 (as always) has caught my eye as the one game in the series that I can't love or hate.

I pondered it for a while, and then STRUCK THE LIST OF DISCOVERY:

1. Raiden is spelled Raiden. D:

2. If Rose and Raiden had never fought about Godzilla, then they would have never had a cheesy filler for that one scene.

3. RaidenxRose would have never existed if they hadn't fought about Godzilla.

4. Godzilla is the foundation of MGS2.

...

GENIUS?! I would dare to say otherwise.

...
So, what are your thoughts on the game? Sure, I know that the first things that come to mind are Raiden's constant complaining, Rose's ridiculous conversation topics, and the whole plotline CONFUSION, but I still think that there's room for some credit.

Unless I'm wrong?

I like the series, played all of them with the exception of 4 - and I'm not too enthusiastic about it now that I've seen all the important parts of the game (live stream, lol).

It's MGS > MGS3:SE > MGS:TTS > MGS4 > MGS2, pretty much. Nothing beats the first one in terms of subtly, voice acting and general awesomeness. Snake Eater was great too, the gameplay ruled and the additions actually made sense (the whole survival thing with camo, treating your own wounds, etc), a return to the classic military theme (after the pretentious mess that was MGS2) as well as a great homage to Ian Fleming's James Bond series.

Haaa, I know the feeling. I ruin games for myself all the time by doing that.

Yeah but my lack of enthusiasm comes from not liking a lot of what I saw, my main grief's with the storyline and atmosphere, it's like MGS2^2 - too many fights against robots, too much pretension, too much shit that doesn't make sense. It sort of lacks focus, the cutscenes are a bit long and over the top (Jesus Christ the first Raiden VS Vamp fight was ridiculous) and the bosses lack the playful absurdity and character of previous installments, instead you get supermodels with completely irrelevant sobstories after the fight.

The final cutscene was fucking awesome though. Especially when
Ocelot did his hand gesture and dropped the classic line "You're pretty good" and when Big Boss uttered "This is good... isn't it?" before dying. Manly tears.
Now THAT was awkward. And we also find out that Vamp is a masochist.

I didn't mind the cutscenes TOO much. ... Well, maybe it's because I love getting into long, complicated storylines. It answered a lot of my burning questions. But I could see your point for some things.

I cried. A LOT.

MGS2 was a game I hated. It took me over a year and a half to beat it because I just wasn't motivated enough to play it. Raiden is THE lamest character ever in the story of videogames and I couldn't but shake the feeling that Rose was in the middle of her period while the mission was happening.

It would be a good game if you just eliminated Raiden and Rose from the game and replaced them with... I dunno, almost anything. Rocks lying on the floor, or maybe Marth and Roy.

Minus Roy, you mean.

Amen to that. Especially that scene about Raiden's room. That made me laugh more than anything.

"daisies you, sick woman! A man wants his privacy and his pr0n! Stay the hell out of my room!"

That SHOULD have been his line.

Sarah: My point is that even Raiden and Rose are lamer than Roy. Even Roy would have made an improvement to that game.

But that would make no sense. As you may remember, Rose "dramatically" states that, "Your room was empty. Just like your empty heart Raiden!"

Basically, it all translates to "Wah, wah, waaaah."

I still can't believe Hideo Kojima based Rose off of his own wife. Poor, POOR guy.

He's a spy. You'd think he'd know where to hide his pr0n in an empty room. Or make it look like an empty room in case your paranoid girlfriend wants to get inside and then get all whiny about it.

Also, my condolences to Kojima-san for having a paranoid wife.

I haven't played the MGS games yet, I have been playing the other sneaking games from Kojima.
So how bad should I go out and play the games?

Go and get MGS and MGS 3. NOW.

And get a hacked version of MGS2 where the main character and his girlfriend aren't whining the whole game, and you'll get an enjoyable game experience.

Seriously, making a soap opera out of a game like this?

Okay, hardcore MGS fan here, so here are my thoughts

MGS: Great game, even though many of the situations are reused from metal gear 2. In the original game, not being able to take aim first person wise made the players rely more on stealth then weapons...and i'm not the best at stealth games...When twin snakes came out, I was so pop flyin' with the ability to take aim with guns...I gotta admit, some of foxhound members were stupid...really stupid...*cough*decoy octopus*cough*...

MGS2: Not a bad game. Certainly is a much better sequel then Devil may cry 2 ever was. There are some bad parts to it, yes, and some bad writing points, and some reused situations from Metal Gear...but all in all, i didn't hate the game.

MGS3: My favorite game of the series. My only complaints are some stupid bosses...oh, look at me! I'm covered in bees! oooo, i've got stings all over my face...so freakin dumb...The only good bosses in that game are the end, the sorrow, and the boss.

I have yet to play MGS4 or portable ops, and i refuse to play acid...
