Does anyone play it? Essentially it is a bit like Diablo 2, although it is a bit more complicated and it is still in closed beta.

I was lucky enough to get a beta key and all I can say is that it looks like it can become a pretty great game!

pathofexile.com

It is going to be free to play with some kind of micro transaction shop. The devs have been a bit tight lipped on the shop, but they say they won't sell anything that makes the game "pay to win".
The active abilities (the ones you have to push a button to activate. Skills in many games) are bound in gems you find while playing. You socket them in weapons and armor to get their effects. Their effects can be further modified by using a support gem in a linked socket to add more projectiles, increase crit chance or whatever you have. It is a really great concept.

Looks more like Diablo 3 than Diablo 3 does

The skill tree is pretty daunting, but it is actually rather intuitive in function.

I just realized that the picture is slightly outdated. The keystones are missing and some nodes were moved around a bit to make players choose a bit, however it is still pretty accurate.

I love how the active spells and abilities work in this game though. Being able to use support gems to make the spells more powerful and modify their effects is a great way of making unique characters.

been playing it about a week or so. have a lvl 30-something archer and a lvl 10 or so witch.

it really feels like a pretty diablo II with a Materia system set on a FFX sphere grid. i do greatly enjoy it even if i have like NO fucking idea what the storyline even is supposed to be

I lost interest at "Microtransactions". I would gladly pay cheddar for the game as a whole rather than have to deal with things like (theoretically) gem-finders and XP boosters. Nearly every free-to-play game I've played has just ruined itself by getting too greedy with cash item shops.

If Valve can do it right why can't other companies?

I don't have anything against Path of Exile; I haven't played it yet. It's just that I'm afraid of getting into it and then later on it in its life it becomes a grindfest where the cash shop is only way to progress at any decent rate. That's happened to way too many games I've played.

Have you actually looked at the Path of Exile shop?

I was just going off of Brekkjern saying that the devs have been pretty tight-lipped about it. That implies that they've been keeping their content a secret. But now that I look at it, their microtransations purely cosmetic. I remember a game I played once where (the sheer majority of) the stuff you paid for were cosmetic items. It was called Super Monday Night Combat. And the last time I checked, that game was dead.

That might have to do more with the game itself than the transaction model. TF2 and DOTA2 seem to prove that a F2P game can be fully sustained on cosmetic micro-transactions. Also, please do some basic research next time before making a post judging the game.

Alright, sorry, I'll make sure to do that in the future.

I think the reason that TF2 and DoTA 2 have been so successful with their setups is because Valve and DoTA have legions of loyal fans. That, and Valve receives cheddar from Steam which most likely provides some upkeep. Path of Exile is a brand new game that doesn't have sequel power to work on like TF2 and DoTA 2, nor does the studio have legions of fans built up over the years like Valve. I've decided that I'll try and get into the beta or just download it when it comes out, but I will pay close attention to that shop; at the first sign of a cash shop item that "adds convenience" or what not, I'll be out.
