So. The latest wow killer. It's in beta now. I know this because wow is dead and so is my warcraft guild. Temporarily anyways.

So it's a totally knock off of wow, you get 4 classes with like 27 sub classes. Graphics look nice.

Is anyone here actually playing this game?

I hear good things about it though.

It looks interesting, but DC Universe is actually holding my interest at the moment, with planned monthly updates and all.

If it has the standard first month free, I'm sure to give it a try, at least.

Rift right now is in Open beta, at least for one more day I think. All of this is just from listening to my wow friends talk about it non stop.

Also nice Sig.

I've played it. Enjoyed it, too. You pretty much have free reign to play however you want so long as it vaguely conforms to one of the Warrior/Cleric/Rogue/Mage archetypes. Even after you've figured out which three souls you want to use to the end of your days, you can have four sets of them, and switch between each one in two seconds after leaving combat.

This means that if you're fighting some guy who can't defend himself against your class and he manages to get away and hide behind a rock for long enough, he can come out from behind it and crush you with a more advantageous set. The beta hasn't brought the level cap all the way up, but it's pretty much guaranteed that the game will become a lot less diverse when everyone figures out the absolute most efficient setups for each class. From what I have experienced, though, nothing is so overpowered or unfair that you can't overcome it with the right tactics or a bit of luck. You will destroy people and you will be destroyed in PvP. I've yet to see anyone who seems truly invincible.

Oh, also, the in-game rifts they're talking about aren't some cheap gimmick like having wings in Aion. You actually will have rifts sitting around pretty much all day, and they will launch invasions and construct footholds if left unchecked. Sometimes, the invasions actually become a zone-wide event where everyone pretty much gathers into a giant lynch mob and then fights a raid boss after closing all of the rifts in the zone.

That aside... the quests are pretty much exactly what you would expect, and you're forced into the exact same order of progression each time you make a new character (although if you're a mage, you can be ANY kind of mage, and so on). There are also Easter eggs scattered about every zone which award level-scaled gear of potentially incredible quality. I spent half a day searching the bottom of a lake for crates with some friends and came out of it wearing blues and purples for my trouble.

I've heard some nice things about it, nothing too interesting.
When a friend of mine was describing it to another friend, i walked into the conversation when he was explaining the classes and thought they were talking about guildwars 2

WoW picks MMOs like RIFT out of its teeth on a regular basis. This is nothing different.

I tried it, and the classing system was so gray and undefined I was sick of it before I got past level 15.

Been playing Rift since closed beta (pre-order). I like it a lot so far! Skill system is nice and offers variety, and the lore is decent. Missions are standard MMO fare; Rifts tend to be a lot of fun. Been on a PVP server for a while - only issue with that is if you're Defiant, the queues for PVP events can be incredibly long. Ended up switching to Guardians because the wait would be a minute or less. Guess being a rebel is the more popular option.

(Honestly my biggest beef is that I can't make my Guardian black, I mean gosh.)

It does the public quest things Warhammer did pretty well, and the rock paper scissors pvp is pretty fun. Looks good so far, but I don't know if it'll last.

I liked this game before it started declaring itself as a WoW killer. Almost every other MMORPG has done that rift, and they've all failed.

Head Start just began for people who preordered the game. Anyone else preorder?

Yep, been enjoying it. I had an itch to play WoW but this is a pleasant change. I like the whole rift event thing too, adds a nice touch.

Apparently my riftblade isn't good at DPS though but whatever

It seems as if maybe if MMOs didn't try to kill WoW they might do well on their own.

Been playing it, good game that seems to have decent pvp. I rolled a warrior and rogue so far. Going to be spending more time on the rogue though.

I really want to give this a try, but with Dragon Age 2 coming out right away, it'll have to wait till I wrap that up.

I always prefer warrior/rogue classes to be my first when possible, so are they fun in Rift?

I've been enjoying warrior so far. Tanking is simple for now, but I'm only level 21 so I'll see how it progresses

And now that I think about it, what shard does everyone play on? I'm on Duskwood myself
