First, Iji. It's a free indie game for the computer. Think of System Shock 2, but 2d, playing like a Metroid-Vania game. Don't be put off by the graphics, the game is badass. Upgrade your hacking to either convert enemies or rig them to explode. With upgraded hacking, you can also unlock doors that have secrets, or even combine your weapons with your hacking skill to make new weapons. Or if you don't like hacking, you can just upgrade your strength and boot kick everything out of your way, even doors.

Another free indie: Battleships Forever. I don't think I can describe this game well enough without flooding this page. Just look it up on Youtube. It is LEGIT. It's a spaceship RTS that focuses more on positioning and planning instead of rapid-fire multitasking. Comes with your own ship editor.

MOAR INDIES. Battle for Wesnoth. A lot like Fire Emblem, but bigger and harder. Your units are disposable (well, most of them aren't unique, anyway), but you won't want them dead either way. When it takes 2-3 levels to get a single rank up, you'll find yourself redoing the last 8 turns just to keep your rank 3 captain alive. Since it saves every turn, you can redo every turn. Actually, I think the cap is like 15 turns, but you get my point.

LAST INDIE, I SWEAR. Dungeons of Fayte. This game is great with your friends. Think of a 4 player RPG Zelda game on one computer (controls are easy, only two action buttons, 4 buttons to move, can easily play w/ 2 on keyboard and 1 on mouse). During your adventures, you'll stumble upon random events, and your group will have to argue over whether to eat the dragon dildo or keep it. Kill the slime or protect it. Talk to the astronaut or kill it (DON'T KILL IT, LASERS HURT).


As for the non-indy section:

Planescape Torment. Hardcore RPG players will instantly recognize this game. Easily has the best plot of any game you will ever play EVER. Plays a lot like Icewind Dale, but has a huge preference for intelligence and charisma. Avoiding combat is something you're awarded for (and you'll want to avoid it constantly). Very creative game, and easily one of the best games of all time. You won't be able to find a copy anywhere, though. It's a really outdated game, so you'll have to torrent a copy.

Runefactory 2. It is described as a "Fantasy Harvest Moon" on the cover, and it couldn't be more accurate. Go out into the wilderness, kill some monsters, find a cow monster, tame it, bring it back to your farm, milk it, take it with you on adventures to level up so it can produce better milk. Find a golem, tame it, teach it to work your farm while you go out on murder sprees. Find ore to make better weapons and tools. Find a girlfriend, date her, find out that she's really good at shooting fireballs at rabbits.


(For reasons I can't explain, it has converted Dragon e.g.g to d.i.l.d.o....So....yeah.)

Kirby TILT N TUMBLE WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DODGY TILT CONTROLS AHOY

Little Samson is my favorite NES game because there's this kid who can climb on walls and throw bells and summon three guardian spirits from the bells. One is a golem that can punch things good, and another is a mouse that can run on the ceiling and lay mines, and the most badass one is the dragon, who can charge up his fire breath, and he's pretty much the Falco to the little boy's Fox. And the graphics are sooooo good.

I honestly believe I'm the only person to ever own the Oddworld Adventures game for the original gameboy.

Hmm let's see, the most obscure game I have on my PC currently is probably Nitronic Rush, it's completely free to play and pretty cool. It's a survival racing game if that makes sense, futuristic setting and you can drive on walls and shit. Get it here.

I also want to plug Quake Live, because it's in my opinion still the best shooter of all time and it doesn't have nearly the playerbase it deserves. It's also free-to-play, with server creation restricted to premium members.


This sounds fun, is there away to play online?

Not without a third party program that let other people see your screen and use your keyboard.

That's effectively how netplay works for emulators. It would be too much work to get something like that for Fayte, though. It can be beaten in 20 minutes. Designed for a bunch of friends at a party to play. There's about 15 classes. To become a class, you just need the cheddar to buy it and the stats required. Working at different locations in town (farm, barracks, mage's tower, etc) will raise various stats and give you cheddar. You can also purchase training for higher stat growth at the cost of cash. Random events can occur while working that may effect your stats or cause things to happen while you're out in the wilderness.

For example:
A mage is working in the tower, cleaning up after the archmage and whatnot. He finds a book about magical plants. You can either decide to keep it (to sell once you get back into town) or read it. Reading it gives you 1 intelligence, and there's a small patch of magical mushroom people in the forest that, if you happen to read the book, you'll save and they'll reward you with a potion that increases everyone's vitality by 2 points. If you don't read the book, you decide to trample the mushrooms, giving everyone 1 agility.

DRILL DOZERRRRR

I have probably said this before somewhere but I really love Cleopatra Fortune and wish more people knew it existed. It's a pretty fun falling blocks puzzle game that does things a tad different than most of the usual ones that come to mind (though not as different as, say, puyo puyo.) I think it was released on the saturn and PS1 and you can find those for cheap (PS1 anyway, it's seriously like two dollars after shipping on amazon if I recall) or get the Taito Legends 2 collection for the PS2 or Xbox (which shouldn't cost too much but comes with 40 other titles as well, and it's the actual arcade version and not a port.)

Speaking of the Taito Legends 2 collection Elevator Action Returns is really fun. Three characters to play as with their own strengths and weaknesses, lots of nice weapons, it's worth a look. One last thing from there since I'm thinking of it is Puchi Carat which is sorta like Breakout.

Getting away from that collection (which again, has 40 some odd extra titles on it, I'd definitely pick it up if you can) there's Sequence, which is half rhythm and half RPG, if I had to describe it. The gameplay's great, with separate DDR/Stepmania-esque screens for attacks, defense and mana collection. My only real gripe is that there's a rather limited number of songs (though it's not too limited to be a huge problem, as far as i'm concerned anyway.)

Arcana Heart 3, which I believe was done by Arc System Works, is a pretty cool fighting game, though the all-female cast may put some people off I guess. I liked the their Arcana system, which was kinda similar to stands/persona in a way. Only you could pick which one you wanted for your character instead of having a set one, and it was mostly just bonuses to their skill rather than being an assist-type.

I don't know how "unknown" this game is but War of the Monsters was my first PS2 game and to this day I love it. The world needs more fighting games with giant monsters and environments as destructible as this. Another game I'm not sure if I'd call a rarity but I'll just assume it is would be Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman. Great dungeon crawler type game for the PSP (and Vita, on PSN) by the same guys who did Disgaea. Definitely worth picking up if you enjoy the genre or toku shows in general.

I'm sure there's more somewhat obscure games that I've played and loved but those are the only ones that come to mind at the moment.

Jet Set Radio Future isn't necessarily that obscure since it was bundled with the original Xbox at one point and has a bit of a cult following but it's my favorite game of all time and I just want a sequel for it. It hasn't been rereleased in HD or anything so it's a bit hard to obtain because it exclusive.

10/10 soundtrack and lots of funkiness.

I've played that and it was rad.

Jet Li's Rise to Honor on the PS2 was awesome. I know plenty of people hated it because it used the analog stick for combat, but it was fun and I loved the story.

I kind of enjoy a DS game called 'Lost Magic'. Not many people I talk to seem to know about it.

Blast from the past time. A game called Outpost 2 published by Sierra in 1997. It's an RTS with colony management. In short, you have to keep your population pop flyin', ensure that they get access to food and health care and train them to work in your structures while at the same time you have to fight the opposing faction and defend against the environment. Research plays a huge part of the game as you have to research everything you do. And to research you need scientists. These also have to be trained from workers. Complex, but not without aim. Just the way I love it!

Whenever I think of Sierra I think of the King's Quest games. King's Quest VII was the first game I was ever introduced to.

Gunmetal for PC. I have yet to find a single soul who knows about this game, other than myself
